Since November, John Huber, the U.S. Attorney for Utah, has been on the case. Trump apparently didn’t know this, but he should have. Sometimes it’s better to talk to the Attorney General than mindlessly to blast him on Twitter.
Huber was appointed by President Obama, but his name was submitted by Senators Hatch and Lee of Utah. Thus, his selection by Sessions seems like a shrewd move. As Obama’s nominee it will be difficult for critics plausibly to paint him as anti-Democrat. But as the favorite of Hatch and Lee, Republicans should be confident that he’s not in the Democrats’ pocket. Moreover, because Huber works out of Utah, it’s unlikely that he’s connected in any way with D.C. insiders such as James Comey and Andrew McCabe.
What about the decision to use a U.S. attorney rather than appoint a special counsel? This decision also seems sound, and not just because I don’t like special counsels. The combination of the IG and the USA should be able to accomplish as much as a special counsel would — and accomplish it faster and with less fanfare.
The absence of fanfare is an advantage because it makes it more difficult for Democrats and their media partners to push the idea that anyone is being persecuted. A Justice Department investigation headed by two Obama appointees is harder to shoot at than a special counsel. And, of course, nothing prevents Sessions from appointing a special counsel if changed circumstances militate in favor of doing so.
In sum, Sessions has handled this matter well, Trump’s foolish tweets notwithstanding.

Just an observation: Trump may not be as unaware as some think. It’s been observed that his tweets have some of the character of a psyops campaign.
If something were going on behind the scenes then Trump, someone so many thinks is an idiot, being so publicly mad because nothing is going on is perfect camouflage. They would be sure to believe him because they’re so smart.
Convictions before the Nov 2018 elections would seem to be in order.
My problem with this scenario is that now we are essentially depending on Huber - an Obama appointee about whom little is known - to be an honest player.
I’m not really all that comfortable with that.
Not all that comfortable with coup conspiracy suspect Rod Rosenstein being in on the loop either.

What is most disappointing to me is how poorly POTUS has been served. I expected betrayal from the GOPe but not his own cabinet. Tillerson, Mattis and Sessions in particular. No POTUS can govern without his own party and being obstructed by his own admin. Trump has a basically impossible situation right now. That’s why I will give him the benefit of the doubt on the omnibus garbage bill.
The fact that Sessions announced about three weeks ago that Huber had been appointed, but that no one even knew his name until Sessions announced it this week is a good indication that this operation is being professionally run by people who observe the rules (as opposed to the way the DOJ was run the previous eight years, for instance.)
And, to my mind, any operation looking into Clinton’s email fiasco, the unmasking of individuals under FISA surveillance, the massive leaking early in the Trump administration, etc., that is professionally run is going to uncover a lot that needs to be revealed to the American people, and to a ton of mainstream reporters who have spectacularly failed to do their jobs for the past ten years.

I’m not going to bother to quote his letter, but I think if you actually read it you’ll find that Huber was assigned to investigate, not just “conduct a review” and as a prosecutor he has the power to indict.

Indict Trump for what, exactly? Mueller has served to distract Trump's enemies and lull them to sleep under the IG's microscope, but that was Mueller's part in the play. It was a brilliant trap that had to fool most of Trump's own supporters in order to work. Sun Tzu would be proud.
