Agreed, I recall firearms prohibitionists in years past arguing how New York City and even Washington, DC (with 1977 handgun ban) were apparently safer than living with the violent yahoos and rednecks in the South or West.

A year after the Baltimore Bullets moved to DC they changed the name of the team to Wizards, some PR lackey's idea of "making a difference". Yeah, like that really reduced gun violence in CD, didn't it? Symbolism over substance.
