WMAL is a really bizarre radio station. They’ve got the two real fireballs in conservative talk radio, Chris Plante and Mark Levin. They have Rush. The new morning man, Vince Coglianese (sp), is a real comer, but he’s paired with a 30-something Jersey girl named Mary Walter who is very nasal and has few if any original insights into current events (she used to be an advice show hostess in NJ). The morning show features 10 minutes at 0707 each Monday with Joe diGenova, which could be the best ten minutes of radio in the entire week. The morning show is marred by the newscasts (see below) and the weak voiced traffic gal, Jamee Whitten.

The bad about WMAL is their news operation, which frankly stinks. The news copy sounds as if it was written down at the Democrat National Committee, and the same copy airs all day; the morning newsguy, Bill Thompson, has a silky smooth voice and delivery but is a man of the hammer and sickle. The afternoon infobabe, Maria Leaf, is an assault on one’s ears, and is a liberal as well. She should share some of her testosterone (and she’s got a lot) with financial guy Ric Edelman.

Then there’s the annoying Walmart Wolverine, Larry O’Connor, the afternoon drive guy, who sometimes comes up with very conservative thoughts, but is otherwise extremely annoying. As I despise the University of Michigan, which O’Connor pimps ceaselessly (even though he didn’t go there), I refuse to patronize any of his sponsors.

WMAL also has a sleazy way of pitting their sponsors against each other. They have at least five real estate agents, four dentists, three roofing companies, and two carpet cleaning companies who tear each other apart. I think it is dishonest where the aforementioned Walmart Wolverine pimps “Sarah and Debbie Reynolds” as the only realtors he would trust, while Vince claims that he trusts only Frank Prindle. Meanwhile, Eric Stewart, who has bought weekend block time on WMAL for close to two decades, is attested to by Chris P. Prindle has recently bought 5 minute blocks on Fridays in which he lambastes Sarah and Debbie’s business practices (but not by name).
