White House on Amazon: Trump always looking to level the playing field
Axios ^ | 3/28/2018 | Alayna Treene

Posted on 03/28/2018 12:53:59 PM PDT by onehipdad

Fielding questions over whether President Trump wants to go after Amazon and it's tax treatment, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday that Trump is "always looking to create a level playing field for all businesses and this no different." But she added that the president has no specific policies to address that at this time.

The backdrop: Axios' Jonathan Swan reported earlier today that Trump hates Amazon, which led Amazon shares to drop 6% at market open.

“Amazon is by far NOT the lowest price out there anymore. Frankly, I have been shocked that by shopping around both online and locally that many varied products I need and buy often are cheaper elsewhere. Amazon is no longer the best price location, sometimes by a lot.”

that’s especially true for amazon’s “affiliates”, but otherwise amazon themselves are usually competitive.

The UK also has big box chains Tesco and (WM-owned) ASDA

Yes, but they are mainly supermarkets with most of their area selling food - and they don't contribute to the small town vibrant areas mentioned in the post I replied to, since they are almost all on the outskirts of any urban or semi-urban area.

Just to show the changes, the South Liverpool Super ASDA store is on the site of the former Triumph factory that made TR7 sports cars. :^)

Amazon (and every other business out there) only has to collect taxes in states in which they have a presence (nexus). Nexus determination is controlled by the Constitution under the Due Process and Commerce clauses. The government wants to change that and is going after Amazon first. Imagine being a small business with a presence in one state doing business online and having to set up your business to collect sales tax from the almost 10,000 sales tax jurisdictions in the US. It would be a pain for any business to have to do that, let alone a small business.

Yup. T-Berg in Berlin - Grunewald. Not far from the Olympic stadium.

Axios is a Comcast property, and so is NBC and MSNBC.

Comcast deserves no revenue from its conservative subscribers.

Amazon is a problem because sooner or later they will be the only game in town and the prices go up, up, up

I doubt that. How many people make most of their purchases by dollar amount (even excluding things like cars and homes) on Amazon?

We had USAF personnel from the 690th Electronic Security Group there. Most of the Group was at Templehof, but I helped remove some of their computers at T-berg in 1991.

We closed the whole Group a few months later. Spent many a evening drinking Kindle Bier up in the Templehof bowling alley... (up on the 6th floor?)

Kindle beer, yes :) I remember the 690th. Never met any of them though. They were behind their own locked door.

I was there from 87 - 92. Only went to Templehof a few times. They had a nice stereo store there! I bought a Beta VCR - LOL!

Amen brother.

Speaking to your post, I myself try to and encourage others to buy local and bank local to keep the money in the community and stop feeding the globalist beast!

The fact that this President has this on his mind is a great testament to his character and pro-American leanings.

Full disclosure: I got the idea about buying and banking local from Gerald Celente, who writes the very popular TRENDS Journal.

It is his thinking, but I adopted it because it is right thinking, imo.

“I can live without mom and pop.”

Please rethink your position on ‘Mom and Pop”. Buying from them will not only keep the money circulating in the community you live in, but it works to starve the very beast that working against America’s interests. On immigration, for example.

“Go look at some pictures of some downtown areas - say, in the 1940’s, and today and then tell me you wouldn’t pay a bit more to live in THAT world (well, WWII aside!).”

Very good point. And well said.

Amazon is not just affecting box store retail or even mail order retail. They are now competing with huge distributors of paper and plastic, like Proctor and Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, etc. They are about to roll out their own line of diapers that can be ordered online and delivered to the front door.

Many different companies are starting to fear Amazon.

We are going to build a wall and Amazon is going to pay for it - or something like that.

downtowns died in the 1970’s.

Only where there wasn't enough foresight to keep the downtown alive. Try Aiken, SC.

It’s amazing how many socialists are on FR.

If Trump tweeted “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs!” There would be people here posting “Winning!”

I see the Socialist in Chief is repeating LIBERAL talking points and going after “big business”. Trump supporters need to look in the mirror and admit what it is you support. It isn’t capitalism, it isn’t economic freedom, it’s liberal socialism.
