Why would Russia bother killing an old spy who has given up his spying years ago. It’s not as if he had access to some super secret info that he may divulge and he just defected.

I think that we should be prominently assertively self-defensive. But not sending our men to defend other people’s sandboxes.
Build a wall, arm to the teeth, work with allies, but no wars, and certainty no wars for others.
