The Weather Channel TV network was sold Thursday to comedian-turned-media mogul Byron Allen.
Allens Entertainment Studios Inc. bought the 36-year-old TV staple from the Blackstone Group, Bain Capital and Comcast.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed, but sources pegged the price at about $300 million.
The network and its digital property weather.com were purchased by the trio 10 years ago for $3.5 billion.
The web properties were sold to IBM in 2015 for $2 billion.
The Weather Channel is one of the most trusted and extremely important cable networks, with information vitally important to the safety and protection of our lives, said Allen, who rose to fame as a Real People host in 1979. The acquisition of the Weather Channel is strategic, as we begin our process of investing billions of dollars over the next five years to acquire some of the best media assets around the world.

Founded in 1993 by Allen, Entertainment Studios owns the HD cable networks JusticeCentral.tv, Cars.tv, Pets.tv and Recipe.tv.

Maybe that is because the weather actually changes in SoCal about twice every year.
Joking. But not really.
Why did they sell?
Thanx for the hint
(I don't want to admit it, but I DID need it)
“Wasnt he on Entertainment Tonight or some such crap?”

I think it was some network morning news show or something like a “Real People” type program. A bland, forgettable presence.
True. But the whole show was that way.
Ah, so it was “Real People” - those types of shows had hosts that just weren’t very memorable.
Current weather broadcasts are a joke anyway. This will be stoopid weather laced with Trump hate.
Last time I used Weather Channel, it was wrong.

WHOA...who is ‘WE’? AND WHY?
No, you are correct. Weather here is hot from July through November, cool or mild from December to June, maybe a week of rain in March. No need for a whole channel. Now if there were a How To Prepare for the Homeless Ruining Your Town channel, that could be helpful.
[ Never heard of this guy ]
I thought he was O.K. He bought up a bunch of internet domains and produces shows like Cars.TV which is usually alright. Made money off that.
Then I noticed his comedy show would have “special” episodes called “Hot Chocolate” - i.e., featured only black comedians.
Oddly enough, I never noticed a “White Chocolate” version. Or “Red Licorice”, “Yellow Cake”, “Brown Cocoa” version.
Odd, that.
Yup - the Weather Channel was useful when it first aired, but has become superfluous in the internet age.
Am I missing something?? In 10 yrs the selling price has dropped from $3.5 billion to a mere $300 million??? Sounds like a desperation fire sale....
Yeah one of those silly Hollywood shows mother used to watch 20 years ago or so...
Not if he's the next in line to buy a dying property with an obsolete product.
It is supposed that he bought TWC for its satellite service which he’ll then use for his other properties and TWC will go away.
I think that the way the Weather Channel clowns push “global warming” while screwing up the next day’s weather forecast, it’s only appropriate that a comedian run the joint.
Who watches The Weather Channel anymore?
Might as well change the name to the Global Warning Channel.
LOL... Let me tell you about my experience in the trusting a weather forecast.
I was in Junior High School, the weather man, said that we were going to get 8-12” of snow, that night. Well, I didn’t do my Latin homework, thinking schools would be closed. My parents woke me that next morning, told them school would be closed, we had a snow storm. Nope, it rained all night. Went into Latin class and wouldn’t you know it, Mrs. McKinney called on me first.
I had to admit that I wasn’t prepared and why. She told me that she wanted to speak with me after class. I’m really nervous now, she had a smile on her face and told me to never trust the weather forecast. That will always stay with me. Boating makes it, even more important.
