Austin serial bombing suspect killed in dramatic confrontation; ID'd as 24-year-old man

The suspected serial bomber who killed two people and terrorized Austin, Texas, for three harrowing weeks was killed in a dramatic confrontation with police overnight Wednesday, authorities said.

The suspect, identified by police early Wednesday as a 24-year old male, was killed near the motel he was traced to by authorities using surveillance footage from a Federal Express drop-off store and cell phone triangulation technology, according to The Austin American-Statesman.

The man, whose name was not released, died after fleeing the motel in a car, with police hot on his tail. He drove into a ditch, sparking the fatal confrontation.

"We wanted this to come to a peaceful resolution tonight," said Austin Police Chief Brian Manley. "However, we were not afforded that opportunity when he started to drive away."

Police said the man detonated two package bombs as police closed in, firing at him. It was not immediately clear whether he died from the bombs or shots fired by police. One officer was knocked back by the blasts, but none were seriously hurt.

Little known fact. FedEx has not been “Federal Express” since 1993. It is officially “FedEx”, with FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight etc...

Havent we heard that before?

“How did they get a bead on this guy’s cell phone to triangulate it?”

I think I don’t want to know.

Now they’re talking about confiscating the phones of all people who were in the vicinity when a crime occurred. Sounds ominous to me. False accusations/arrests? Government combing through every person’s phone reading all texts, seeing all phone calls. Disturbing.

Does community college in Austin count? It very well may.

That is one reason for a trial run, law enforcement response and ability.

If they are withholding the name it can mean only one thing...

That it's taking time to scrub his social media accounts.

The suspect was transported (in pieces), by ambulance, to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Someone made a comment 20 minutes ago on the sister’s FB page that police have arrested another man from the bomber’s house.

Her Facebook page will probably be deleted soon.

You have to wonder about the level of hate in this world. It has become mind boggling.

“The real techniques used are being kept quiet for obvious reasons.”

The Facebook app is almost intelligent enough to know what you’re doing.

It predicts pregnancy, marriages, firing... Among other things.

“I don’t think that this guy was that clever, or had thought much of anything out.”

No one does. he’s young though, I’m surprised. Normally anyone on the run under the age of 30 has the sense to not only gently place the phone in the river, but can also use their phones to misguide investigators.

You’d be surprised though. The phone and it’s apps are clearly addictions.

Not much expertise needed to make a bomb, complete an electric loop and you have boom!

Yes it is much more sophisticated to tie a string to a trigger.at least that is what the news kept saying. Trip wire much more sophisticated than timed or remote trigger.
