He speaks excellent Arabic but being a communist he’s probably an atheist who just adopts faith image whatever aids him in getting close to people he has an interest in.
Yes he is.
He converted back in the 90s when he was stationed in Saudi Arabia. He doesn’t openly talk about it but has never denied it. It is why he refused to touch the Bible when being sworn in.
He has made statements that make it clear to other Muslims that he is one of them - but may not be obvious to others.
Like when he talked about how he “marveled at the majesty of the Hajj”. Non-Muslims are forbidden from entering Mecca. Thus the only way for him to have marveled at the Hajj was to be a Muslim.
