Engineer on 'Instant Bridge' called authorities TWO DAYS before deadly collapse to report a CRACK

An engineer called the Florida Department of Transportation to report concerns about a crack on their new 'instant' bridge two days before it collapsed - but no one ever picked up their voicemail. FIGG's lead engineer responsible for the Florida International University, FIU, pedestrian bridge project, W. Denney Pate, left a message warning that they had observed some cracking at the north end of the bridge. The voicemail was not picked up until Friday - a day after the bridge collapsed killing six. Pate warned that the cracking areas would need repairs but assured that, 'from a safety perspective we don't see that there's any issue.'

When an engineer calls to say “Houston, we have a problem” you should listen. Bad things happen if you ignore it.

There is a paper trail on this also...has to be. Someone knew.

The lawsuits are going to be huge.

Is it really an accident if you know and do nothing?
Nothing ever happens to these government types local, state or federal.
They come out and say I’m sorry such a tragedy and everyone goes on about their day except for the people who were killed.

Yes!

And just the fact that they went ahead with stress test even though they knew there was a crack. And there were people on and under the bridge at the time.

Complete morons!

Baring the gorilla tape and flex seal comments, how could a support structure be "repaired"?

The state of MA way by cribbing?

To me, stress cracks of a new support structure would mean total replacement due to failure of design/construction.

I watched video of the actual collapse on the Daily Mail, and it looks like there were multiple workers on top too. Probably the testers mentioned. They went for a heck of a ride straight down. I would imagine broken bones at least.

My opinion, which means nothing, is a bigly NO! It’s not an accident but rather a typical non-response when a response was necessary. Sounds like ample warning that fell on deaf ears.

Everyone keep talking about the missing tower and cables. There is this idea that they could have been put in place immediately after the bridge was placed. Even this article says that would be normal procedure.....Yada Yada- BULL CRAP!

Here is the thing. Had the tower and cables been in place at this point then they would have been essentially worthless. Why? Because the other span was not in place. So there was no way to make the structural triangle that make the cables work.
The Tower would have just bent over like a pipe cleaner if any real pull had been placed on it. NO triangle- No strength.

This bridge needed to be supported from underneath from more points than just the ends until it was completely assembled. End of story. What they did here was just insane. And innocent people paid with there lives.

“See something, say something”, what difference does it make? The value of human life in America is many times at the same levels as the sh*thole turd world. It also is quite apparent that government at all levels has zero accountability especially when it is accessory to murder or “manslaughter” of its own citizens.

My understanding was that the person who had the message about the crack on their phone was away for several days and no one kb=new about the crack except the crew at the site. I guess they assumed it was okay when no one. called back.

And as an Engineer I am sure that you would agree with what I just posted before this. That the tower and cables would be worthless without both Bridge spans in place? No triangle.

It’s like they had a head engineer who maybe had qualifications but was not around.

All of the other employees were essentially flunkies who only knew how to do a small portion of the construction.

So much for constructing the bridge in 6 days .... it was cr*p!

Sounds like typical gubmint. Give out a number for an individual who may be on vacation, sick time, etc. instead of hotline that anyone can listen to. OMG. Unbelievable incompetence.

And a final injustice ... an engineering employee, driving the engineering companies truck , was flatten ed like a pancake.

A travesty!

The photos show the complete span in place.

The design has two spans. The one over the highway. And another over the river. The cables on each side of the tower go to opposite spans. The river span was not in place yet. So there was no place to connect the cables on that side. No way to make a triangle.
