Eight Republicans have stepped forward before a Thursday evening filing deadline to challenge former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in the Utah Senate race, including a state lawmaker who says an "establishment insider" can't fix problems in Washington.

Many of the candidates acknowledge the David-vs-Goliath nature of challenging the famous and popular Romney, but they say someone needs to keep the race to replace Republican Orrin Hatch from becoming a "coronation."

"I think he's just expecting to run away with this thing," Republican candidate Sam Parker said. "There are really motivated individuals who are going to do their best to force their way into the conversation."

One would think the citizens of Utah have had enough of “been there; done that” Romney!

Having opposition to Romney divided by 8 ensures Romney winning. One good opposition candidate might have a chance.

This is where the press try to get the non-establishment republicans to attack eachother. Want a chance, just focus on Romney. It makes you look like a patriot that way. Dont attack each other yo!

If the Romney doesn’t get fifty percent, is there a runoff between the top two? Is that how it works?

Eight is too many and will ensure a Romney corronation. Seven of the eight are probably paid by Romney or his backers.

Is that a Romney/insider tactic- to divide the opposition? I’d like to see the strongest conservative stay and the others drop out if they are not getting traction. I respect those who look out for the country’s interests ahead of their own.

Has Romney ever even resided in Utah?

These carpetbagger politicians are despicable for thinking they can just show up during the election cycle and get elected.

Of course, part of the problem is the voters who vote them in.

Long term, this is a way of diminishing the influence of state boundaries.

Some of the eight are just perennial candidates who run every year and get a very small percentage of the vote.

Romney won't have any trouble beating them and they won't take votes away from serious challengers.

Curiously, the most serious candidate has the same name as the last guy Romney ran against for the Senate, far away and long ago: Mike Kennedy.

The nominee is chosen at the state GOP convention on April 21. If no one gets to 60% at the convention, the top two go to a primary June 26.

Very doubtful Romney would not get 60% at the convention. This is a case where many more candidates is actually better.

That’s not how it works in Utah. More candidates at the convention is better chance to deny Romney 60%. A primary isn’t scheduled unless no one gets 60%, and then only the top two compete.
