MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Florida International University’s massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.

The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.

There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.

The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.

No, the politically-connected Munilla family built the bridge, their first project with FIGG. Lots of history on them if you do Internet search. Probably used illegal labor, cut corners, paid bribes, and all will be swept under the carpet because of the political connections. Speculation, but easy enough to read between the lines.

Only if they're Democrats, if any Republicans were involved, I guarantee you'll hear about. I figure they're already blaming Governor Scott right now.

Female owned businesses get AA preference in awarding contracts, add to that some political cronyism, and bingo, a collapsed, inferior bridge.

Yup. A lot of people just didn’t notice any warning signs.

Just like in Parkland. We need a new law to fix it!

Current laws, regulations and rules weren’t followed.

A tragedy is unforseen. This was expected. Its not a flaw, its a feature.

Likely built by Mexican contractors, using Chi-com steel ... but it was Russian hacking, I tell ya!

What is interesting is how the collapsed construction looks like the bridge material disintegrated and has not reinforcement.

“Accelerated Bridge Construction Method.”

It looks like it entered the Accelerated Bridge Worn Out phase a little sooner than expected.

A 950-ton section of a pedestrian bridge was swung into place over Southwest Eighth Street Saturday morning, connecting Florida International University with the city of Sweetwater.

The $14.2 million bridge at Southwest Eighth Street and Southwest 109th Avenue is being built using Accelerated Bridge Construction methods, which have been advanced at FIU. The university said the modular construction method reduces potential risks to workers, commuters and pedestrians and minimizes traffic interruptions.

The bridge is also made of self-cleaning concrete. When exposed to sunlight, titanium dioxide in the concrete traps pollutants and turns them a bright white, the university said.

Officials said the bridge should be completed early next year. FIU President Mark Rosenberg said in addition to connecting the campus with Sweetwater, the 289-feet-long bridge will become a destination for students and faculty.

“This bridge is not just someplace to someplace else,” Rosenberg said. “It will have places where people can study, where they can contemplate, where they can observe the incredible traffic and dynamism of West Dade.”

Currently, the university runs shuttles that ferry students across busy Eighth Avenue safely. A student died crossing Eighth Avenue in August after the shuttle service ended for the day.

Saturday installation marks the first time a bridge this large has been installed in this way.

“Building the major element of the bridge – its main span superstructure – outside of the traveled way and away from busy Eighth Street is a milestone,” said Atorod Azizinamini, chairman of FIU’s Civil & Environmental Engineering Department.

“Probably caused by cost-cutting concerns with substandard materials, rushed construction and sloppy analysis of load and bearing inputs.”

But, I bet the University has a bang-up Diversity Center.

I don’t think it was open to pedestrians yet. Not sure but that’s possible. It might be the injured were in the vehicles trapped beneath all that concrete.
