Lefties are, as near as I can tell, an improbable coalition of folks who generally hate each others guts, but are willing to work together to plunder the national government.

That's it, on a stick. I once heard Walter Mondale, just before his big loss to Reagan, call for a final push from the "degraded, the disillusioned, the disaffected and the damned." It's who they are, and as long as they stick together, they'll be politically a force to deal with. (Incidentally, that quote is not verbatim ... I recall it the best I can, but can't find a transcript of it anywhere.)
