California farm leader says he has a funding fix for Trump's border wall – (trunc)
CNBC ^ | Mar 13, 2018 | Jeff Daniels

When President Donald Trump will visit the border wall prototypes Tuesday in San Diego County, he may have a favorite design in mind, but getting the votes in Congress to secure financing still remains a hurdle.

Then again, one California farm leader in the state's Central Valley — the biggest agricultural region where growers and ranchers have relied on immigrant labor for decades — has come up with what he thinks is a border wall funding solution. And it doesn't involve using American taxpayers' money or funds from Mexico's government.

(Big long snip)

According to Cunha, raising money for the border wall would involve the following: First, the U.S. would allow roughly 8 million undocumented immigrants to have a path to citizenship by paying $1,000 apiece for three-year work authorization cards similar to those issued to DACA recipients. "So the president would have $8 billion earned in round one for the wall," Cunha said. Second, the 8 million immigrants in the third year could renew their status for a 10-year card for another $1,000, bringing in about another $8 billion in total fees. Cunha said the second fee round, however, could be increased to make it $1,500, or generating some $12 billion ...

We’re not legalizing them for a thousand bucks.

The point is they are illegal. There is no amount of money that makes them law-abiding, now that they've shown their colors - that of willingness to violate the law. What's next... can criminals pay various amounts to wipe out misdemeanors and felonies? How much for robbery? rape? murder?

They need to get the heck back. They can wait to be deported (and registered illegal to never return). Or, do so on their own. The latter has the advantage of them being free to get in line legally from their home country - since there is no record of them being here.

What the heck is a “farm leader” ?
Leader of what, the guy is dumber than a cow.
1000$ for 3 years is a pittance compared to what an illegal drains in term of social subsidies, exploding socialism, degradation of social environment, unsecurity, loss of a culture...
And assuming that $8 billions payed will become $8 billions for the wall is a joke. That is not even enough to finance the bureaucracy tasked to collect it over 3 years.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.

You got to make it reasonable to get the registrations. Then ratchet up the fees for Round 2. Once the wall is built, round ‘em all up and catapult em back over the wall.

The income these migrant workers are being paid under the table is able to skirt US income tax as well as California’s income tax. The $1000 fee they would have to pay for a three-year period is chicken feed.

Fascinating

For sure. If you have time browse around YouTube and look at the latest automated farming, they have robots for nearly everything.

Massive machines lay railroads with a five man crew.

I am so old I have nothing better to do and I find the new stuff fascinating. I did not know they replaced wood cross ties with concrete ties until I watched it on YouTube.

According to recent studies, illegal aliens each cost the US a net of $75000 per year in tax dollars (welfare et al they collect minus whatever taxes, fees, SS et al they contribute) - build the wall and keep out just one million illegals over ten years, and the wall pays for itself.....

I hope you read that as, “We should not legalize them for a thousand bucks.”

That would mean that for a fraction of a month’s salary, citizenship could be purchased.

Not buying that idea for a moment.

I support them being repatriated. The process helps them appreciate citizenship.

As for refugees, I think that ship has sailed. NO MORE! PERIOD. Relocate them in the region temporarily and then repatriate them from there.

I believe I seconded what you wrote, but see the usual written english grammar issue of writing exactly what one means.

There is no amount of money that makes them law-abiding...

By that, I mean if we legalize for x dollars, it's the old joke - we've established what we are, now negotiating over the price.

ALL illegals need to go. Those law-abiding that go freely have a shot at coming back, merely because they will have come and gone without a record, when they apply at the back of the line. The others shall be deported, and have an NTR record (never to return).

I did agree with your take on it.

Didn’t mean anything negative by my follow-up.

our country is not (shouldn’t be) for sale to the highest bidder.

When Hispanic countries end their racism and pass equal opportunity laws comparable to the US, when we are as welcome in their countries as they are here, then we will consider increased immigration. Until then - bring on the automation.

Amazing machine! Since it gathers the grapes loosely, I take it they are for wine. Is there a machine that can gather them by bunches for the supermarkets?
