French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday warned his US counterpart Donald Trump against forging ahead with planned tariffs on European steel and aluminium, saying it risked starting a mutually destructive “trade war”.

In a telephone call with Trump, the French leader expressed his “deep concerns”, saying the tariffs due to come into effect in two weeks “risk triggering a trade war, in which all affected countries would be losers”, Macron’s office said.

He also argued that “such measures against allied countries, who respect international trade rules, would not be effective in fighting unfair practices”, and said the European Union would respond in a “clear and proportionate manner to all practises that are unfair or contrary to international trade rules”. […]

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström has said the bloc is “counting on being excluded”, but Brussels has already drawn up a list of American products to target for countermeasures if its exports are affected. …

When everyone warns you of a trade war. They are going to lose it. Trump should let them raise tariffs on Bourbon. Then he should raise tariffs on all their cars. Europe can’t handle us if we just go straight to our biggest guns. They are afraid of the war. Crazy man theory is a great way to handle diplomats.

If everyone loses, that’s better than just us losing. 🤔

Trump is not entering in a full blown trade war. He is sending a clear message that the old rules are dead and the new rules will be fair. They need us more than we need them and Trump knows it so he is making a definitive statement regarding everything - not just steel and aluminum.

You are correct. President Trump knows how to negotiate. That is how he became a success. All these government and liberal retards cannot seem to or purposely do not comprehend what he is up to. He also baits the hook with proposals that he never actually plans to implement because he knows the other side will not budge. He does this to fully illustrate to the public what he is dealing with. A lot of sacred cows are getting shot in the head lately.

Macron is just the latest, in a long line of poot-butts, who’ve been ‘warning’ Trump his entire life.

Prepare to be schooled by the master, Manny.

“Macron warns Trump all sides would lose in ‘trade war’”

translation from EuroPropagandaSpeak: “All of us who have been sucking off the U.S. teat since WWII will no longer be able to take advantage of Uncle Sam.”

All sides lose in a trade war.

Only the US loses the way Macron wants things.

Both sides win the way Trump wants it. (Though EU doesn’t win as bigly as if we stick with one-sided-US-loses tariffs).

The fact is that everyone (including the US) has various tariffs. Trump is making a statement and starting a discussion more than starting a trade war - the beginning of making deals. The new tariffs have an out for any country (be fair to the US) and are not as large as they should be for the stated goal and they are not targeted at worst-offenders (yet). Let the deal-making begin.

They can’t comprehend what Trump is up to because if they could they would then have to give him credit for being right or smart...and they CANNOT do THAT.

All countries may be losers in a trade war — but, most would be much bigger losers than the USA.

The United States is (in effect) a continent-wide free-trade bloc. It has an economy (roughly) on par with the European Union. It has a plentiful supply of a wide range of natural resources. It has a huge marketplace of (relatively) wealthy consumers, and a highly-skilled workforce to produce needed goods and services.

France is over twice as dependent on international trade as the USA. Many countries are far more dependent on trade — and only a handful are less dependent on trade, than the USA. Those are objective facts from the World Band (and other sources, such as the OECD). Check out the statistics here:

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.TRD.GNFS.ZS?name_desc=false

There may be no “winners” in a trade war — but, the USA would be far from the biggest “loser”.

That’s “World Bank” (but “Band” works too, in some ways).

As a side note to this thread, please consider the following.

The foreign trade mess that Pres. Trump is cleaning up is a consequence of the ill-conceived 17th Amendment in conjunction with foreign wars and cleanup and rebuilding after those wars imo, insights welcome.

The 17th Amendment has given us many headaches and needs to be repealed imo.

The 16th Amendment can disappear too.

It fact, to make Trump’s vision for MAGA last as long as possible we need to get rid of 16 & 17A.
