Jeanne Ives' GOP Insurgency: Challenging an Unpopular Governor from the Right
Illinois Times ^ | March 8, 2018 | Scott Reeder

Posted on 03/08/2018 7:43:15 AM PST by PBRCat

“Don’t you think this will be the year of the insurgent?“ Jeanne Ives said as she strolled across the lawn of the Illinois Statehouse. The state representative from Wheaton is challenging Gov. Bruce Rauner in the March 20 Republican gubernatorial primary.

Rauner, who is self-funding his campaign, has more than $55 million in his war chest. Ives has raised about $3 million.

Ives sees herself as leading a conservative insurrection against the governor.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that she uses military terms to describe this political fight. Ives was an Army officer and is a 1987 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

For many GOP social conservatives, the turning point was when Rauner signed House Bill 40, a measure providing taxpayer funding for some elective abortions.

“When he signed HB 40, the calls started coming to my house asking me to challenge him,” Ives said. “I was really upset with him before that. There was a series of really bad legislation that he signed. He failed to lead on a number of good policy issues like education, energy and corruption. He has just not been a good leader at all.”

Multiple Republican state lawmakers, Springfield Catholic Bishop Thomas Paprocki and Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich all have said Rauner promised them that he would veto the abortion funding measure.

When questioned during a joint appearance with Ives before the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board, Rauner did not directly answer whether he had made such assurances.

“The governor is a liar and it is time for Illinoisans to seek new leadership,” Ives said. “The Democrats hope Bruce Rauner is the nominee because they know that they can beat him.”

“People didn’t think Donald Trump could win either and we proved them wrong. I believe Jeanne can win.”

Well she had my vote from the get-go, but the hammering she’s been getting from Rauner’s PAC is relentless. Nothing but lies...what a disappointment he has been.

Go IVES!

Are they readying the governor’s jail cell?

I have no love for Rauner but I’m also smart enough to realize that Ives has never once voted against state labor unions in Illinois and her stance that she “wouldn’t do that immediately” when asked if she’d repeal the Madigan tax hike of last Summer make me realize that this is the Illinois GOPe trying to normalize relations with the state labor unions that are bankrupting this failed state. I will hold my nose and vote for Rauner because he’s the only prayer we have of breaking Madigan, repealing the tax hike and achieving structural reform of the way this awful state spends money. Notice, also, that Ives was nowhere to be found when Janus vs. AFSCME was heard.

IL will elect another Democrat as Governor.

Jeanne Ives will win downstate but the Democrat will carry Chicago.

The 900 lb gorilla in the room that turns IL Blue.

Notice the pattern of Ives’ consistent pro-state worker labor union votes: https://votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/131103/jeanne-ives/43/labor-unions#.WqFb6qIj-4E

This governor hasn’t done anything illegal that I know of, he just hasn’t done anything. Certainly nothing that he promised when he ran on “shaking up Springfield”. The booklet Ive’s campaign sent out explains one reason why - his wife Diana really runs the show and must have his in a lockbox in her purse.

Unfortunately being a liar and a wuss isn’t against the law.

“she “wouldn’t do that immediately” when asked if she’d repeal the Madigan tax hike of last Summer...”

I have heard the quote that you are referring to in Rauner’s deceptive advertisements which are designed to mislead voters. If elected, Ives would not have the authority to repeal the tax hike without legislative approval to do so. That’s what Ives’ full quote was and it is correct. Any tax repeal must be approved by both the legislature and the governor.

The State Assembly and Senate in Illinois are overwhelmingly run by the Rats.

How much could a Republican really do?

So you don’t think her phrasing is, at the very least, a tell? Why would she refer to it that way and not say “if the legislature sent me a bill to do so, sure.” Huge tell, in my book and I watched the whole debate... and, more importantly, read her voting record.

[I will hold my nose and vote for Rauner because he’s the only prayer we have of breaking Madigan]

To put GOV. BRUCE RAUNER and PRAYER in one sentence is almost blasphemy. RAUNER has gleefully signed into law EVERY anti-CHRIST legislation that has reached his desk since he became governor. How can any moral person vote for a man who agrees with HB40 - taxpayer abortion, which defines a BABY IN THE WOMB as a NON-HUMAN and allows PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION? To top it all, BRUCE RAUNER does not keep his word. He is a LIAR.

My Word for you: Remember, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” – James 4:17

Remember that Peter Fitzgerald won because he had supported the Building Trades Unions while he was State Senator and they returned the favor and supported him when he ran for US Senate.

I was all set to vote for Ives. But if Rauner can come out and veto this gun control craziness that Madigan blasted through I would give him my vote out of appreciation. We in Illinois should prepare ourselves for another Dem Governor probably Blago Jr. Hopefully the next Governor I vote for after this election will be in Indiana. F#@k Illinois.

I'm from neighboring Missouri, so I don't have a stake in this, but have to endure the endless political ads.

Just an observation, it seems as though the only reason Rauner was elected was that the Dems had run the state so far into the ground that a change was acceptable to the crazy libs that live there.

But I don't see how Rauner has managed to really gain much traciton for conservative values, so I expect the Democrats to take back the governorship. From the looks of it, just based on who seems to be spending the most money, JB Pritzker will probably emerge as the likely winner.

I do like Ives, but she is facing an impossible task. Chicago is corrupt and liberal, and I don't see how she overcomes that. It's a shame for Illinois residents as the state is probably the worst run state in America. (Except for California, but that's a whole different level of dysfunction.)

Unless the legislature approves a bill to repeal the income tax increase there is nothing any governor can do about the unpopular law. That is reality.

More to the point, why didn’t Rauner engage the legislature to uphold his veto on the income tax? The increase was passed on a bipartisan basis and many legislators said Rauner failed to exercise any leadership on the issue.

Rauner is a scapegoat for the democrats’ profligate spending. Has been since the minute he took office. Both Chicago papers hammered him for the government shutdown. He vetoed
Speaker Mike Madigan’s(the REAL) boss of the state) tax increase plan. The Senate proceeded to override his veto because republicans are merely comic relief in this state. After that he just seemed to capitulate. When his predecessor,Pat Quinn, became governor he won the county where East St. Louis(the largest ghetto in Illinois) and, of course,Cook.Every other county voted republican but it made no difference. Among the dem candidates is Kennedy scion,Chris Kennedy and a fat pig named JB Pritzger,a stone union shill.

Was that supposed to be a selling point? Fitzgerald abandoned the voters and the party and retired the very next election after he got his federal pension.

“engage the legislature?” How FIFTEEN REPUBLICANS ABANDONED HIM. We wouldn’t have the tax if republicans didn’t side with Madigan.

Dennis Hastert, Ray LaHood, Shimkus, Kjellander, Topinka, etal made it very clear that they were supporting Obama and would neve
r support Peter.

When Jack Ryan won the primary to replace Peter, Jack Ryan had a unity party in Wheaton where he said he would continue Peter’s fight against corruption. At that unity event the fencesitters who had not already committed to oppose Jack Ryan do commit then. The Hastert-LaHood-Shimkus-Topinka establishment did not want another corruption fighter.

To the GOP establishment a Democrat was better than a corruption fighter.

Don’t blame Peter (or Jack) for the actions of the IL GOP establishment.
