Hudson County has decided to end its controversial partnership with federal immigration officers, officials announced on Friday.
Activists have long called for the county to cut its ties with the U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) program commonly referred to as 287(g) where corrections officers at the jail are tasked with notifying ICE about inmates who are not legally in the United States.
The county's jail in Kearny will continue to house immigrant detainees, which in October accounted for 60 percent of the jail's population.
The decision comes less than one month after more than half of the county's freeholders vocalized they wanted to end the partnership, which was renewed in 2016.

It is time for these taitor bastards to go to fail but we have “Mr. Magoo”!! Oh Well!!!
I don’t know if the oath of office has changed, but in the 50’s I was a municipal police officer. In the oath I took, I swore to enforce all laws: local, state and federal. Immigration laws are federal and I would have lived up to my oath. What is different now?
Consider the logic of this. 60% of their criminals are “immigrants” [the article scrupulously does not specify how many of them are in the country illegally].
Either way, does that not make the case that it might be unwise to create a haven for people who are over-represented in perpetrating offenses that would land one in jail?
Don’t we have enough of our own home-grown criminals?
I assume ICE is paying a daily rate to house the “immigrant detainees”. I’d guess it’s time to find another jail to spend their (our) money.
I couldn’t tell for sure from the article if that 60% of inmates are being held for immigration or if they’re just the wonderful people here for a better life.
Criminals who are not citizens should be deported, whether immigrants or illegal aliens.
We have enough of our own, no need to import more.
Screw the f-ing activists.
It appears at least 60% of the jail capacity is being used under contract with ICE to house federal detainees. These ICE contracts are usually a cash cow for counties that build and staff jails (usually with federal grants) that greatly exceed their local needs. Since they have chosen to no longer cooperate with ICE in enforcement, the contracts should be terminated and ICE detainees moved to a more cooperative jurisdiction. When local taxes are increased to pay for the fixed cost of operating a suddenly under utilized jail, local freeholders may reconsider their opposition.
Magoo youve done it again.
“Immigrant” detainees my a$$.
They’re ILLEGAL alien detainees!
If I was the ICE director, I would be going after all of the illegals and criminals in these sanctuary territories that have isolated themselves within the US.
If they don't want to cooperate, don't cooperate with them either. Two can play their game.
