The current thinking is a bit different. A couple of years ago, my school was trained in something called ALICE. The letters stand for something—I forget what, but it goes something like this.

As soon as an intruder/threat is noticed, his location is broadcast over the school. Anyone not in his vicinity evacuates and heads for the woods (it’s a rural school 15-20 minutes from law enforcement). Anyone near the intruder locks and blockades the door with desks, cabinets, etc. If he pushes his way in, the adults and children are encouraged to close with him and attack him with what may be at hand (one teacher I know has wasp spray in her desk). (I am aware that this might violate Broward County Sheriff policy). The idea being that if he’s in the room with you, you are likely dead unless you actually stop him.
