“When knight riders would come through our neighborhood...”
Knight riders? Guys in plate armor, with swords and lances? Must have been quite a spectacle.

She's referring to these guys: "Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan."
They were the Knight Riders.

My Dad told me that the current form of the KKK is a merger of two groups, the American Knights with the former Ku Klux Klan now known as the American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. My opinion is that “Knights” would be the correct word here, but perhaps capitalized and in quotes.

The armor on those Knight Riders wouldn’t stop a .223, let alone a .308!
Never bring a lance to a gunfight!
