Amazing how many supposedly competent adults don’t comprehend that all too often the alternative to “bad” isn’t “no bad”, that what we have isn’t perfect but it’s better than the alternatives.

Not amazing at all. History is chock full of examples of (failed) utopian statists who firmly believe they can bring about perfection if they can just get everybody to submit to, and conform with, their superior beliefs. Of course those at the top know it's bunk, but if they can mobilize enough useful idiots they can get their way, by force if necessary.
