Skip Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un. Turn our attention to the Olympics in PyeongChang, where all eyes will be on one of the most astounding athletes of all time — Lindsey Vonn.
Today she towers over downhill racing.
Vonn could end up the most victorious skier — male or female — since the invention of gravity. Or snow.
So fearless has been Vonn’s rise that she’s proposing that the Federation Internationale de Ski permit her to enter men’s competition in downhill.
A glimpse of Vonn’s joie de vivre is captured in a wonderful video of her finally meeting Stenmark, the Swedish super-skier whose record total of World Cup wins is now within her grasp.
The young woman invites Stenmark to watch her race. When she breaks his record, he promises. He knows that it’s by no means certain. But also that, barring tragedy, she’s on track to pass him by.
What’s Vonn going to do then?
At first, her proposal to compete in a men’s World Cup downhill seemed a bit chimerical. “Vonn was turned down so emphatically, there seemed little chance of a change in attitude,” Canada’s CBC reported.
Vonn, of course, isn’t taking no for an answer. “Put me in the dang race,” she says.
Now there are reports that a revived plan could result in a showdown this year or next on the Alberta slopes of Lake Louise. Wouldn’t it be something if the glass ceiling were shattered by a woman moving at 90 miles an hour?

I agree. Women such as Lara Croft and Wonder Woman have shown that women can compete equally with men.
It is time to end "women-only" events in sports, and get rid of Title IV.

She was a chain smoker, and it was a hoot watching her puff away on the chair lift before going on to win her events. She also dropped out of competition to have children, came back, and became a champion again. Amazing.

This reads like satire. US Today was whining about Rippon not being invited to Sunday’s special exhibition, saying how much he charmed mainstream audience with his charm and personality.

Vonn has pissed off half of the country.
She should have kept her politics to herself.
She won no Gold Metals. She will get no Golden endorsement deals.
She might get some low level endorsements, but not Golden ones.
She is a good racer. Too bad this author didn’t focus on her accomplishments, not her slaying of the battle of the sexes dragons.

It s quite an accomplishment to be the all-time hit leader, but I agree with your comment about average. Also, I would expect a lead-off hitter to be the all-time leader in number of hits, since they would have the most number of opportunities.
Pirmin Zurbriggen was the top FIS skier of all time, in my humble opinion. His 40 wins in FIS races is a distant seventh on the all-time list among men, but he won races in every discipline, won four all-around World Cup titles, and only competed for nine years before he retired in his prime at the young age of 27.

Now I’ve been on skis only one night - my sense of it was that you crouch and start accelerating...so I’m not surprised there’s not a huge difference in the times.
