Students in Louisiana thought this math symbol looked like a gun. Police were called

Updated 2 hours 51 minutes ago A discussion among students at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, La., about a mathematical symbol led to a police investigation and a search of one of the student’s homes, according to the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On the afternoon of Feb. 20, detectives investigated a report of terroristic threats at the school, where they learned that a student had been completing a math problem that required drawing the square-root sign.

Students in the group began commenting that the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number, looked like a gun.

Eh I don’t think it is BS. Not sure what your issue is with homeschooling; however, based on statistics, yes I would say that most home educators are up to snuff...

https://www.nheri.org/research-facts-on-homeschooling/

Academic Performance

The home-educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests. (The public school average is the 50th percentile; scores range from 1 to 99.) A 2015 study found Black homeschool students to be scoring 23 to 42 percentile points above Black public school students (Ray, 2015).
Homeschool students score above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or their family’s household income.
Whether homeschool parents were ever certified teachers is not related to their children’s academic achievement.
Degree of state control and regulation of homeschooling is not related to academic achievement.
Home-educated students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT tests that colleges consider for admissions.
Homeschool students are increasingly being actively recruited by colleges.

https://wehavekids.com/education/Do-Homeschoolers-Really-Do-Better-on-Tests

Homeschooled students score about 72 points higher than the national average on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The average American College Test (ACT) score is 21. The average score for homeschoolers is 22.8 out of a possible 36 points. Homeschoolers are at the 77th percentile on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.

Advocates of homeschooling point to these standardized test results to show that not only does homeschooling work, it is also superior to public schooling. Critics disagree and say that demographic and other explanations may account for the higher homeschooling scores.
\

BTW, I don’t have a dog in this hunt—my 3 graduated from a top-rated public high school and all went on to public universities—one completed PhD, one completed MS, the other beginning MS...

I did have nieces and who were home schooled—all turned out very well!

I don’t believe a home-schooled generation would lead to an illiterate public.

Please, please say this is satire!

*************

What’s more amazing to me is they search the students home and found no guns.
That is a rural area and hunting, etc is a part of life there.

Well, they got rid of cursive writing. Now it’s the end of square roots.

ABC/Wapo had a poll asking if these shootings are a result of mental illness, or the result of being able to obtain firearms. The polls said 57/28 that mental illness was believed to be the main factor.

ABC/Wapo rejected the notion, and told the 57% that they were stupid.

And here we have this story, about some illiterate dumbass brainwashed teenager who has mistaken the symbol for a square root as a gun.

These people, from the kid, their parents, down to the teachers and police who are actually stupid enough to actually persue this, are either totally brain dead, or are so thoroughly indoctrinated, that they have become essentially useless to society, and are the epitome of what one would call a useful idiot, aka: a socialist democrat.

Uh, only imaginary “i”. As with all even roots. Mathematically made to work but not in the “real” world.

The “mental” thing is actually a bit off, too.

The PRIME reason for these escalating mass murders is IMMORALITY.

Ever since Dr. Spock, we’ve been enabling anti-social behavior, declaring everything to be “OK” and everyone’s “feewings” and beliefs to be “valid”, and further that we should “express” those feelings. Expression of bad things is not good - it becomes habit, and bad habits are just that - bad.

People are shocked when this happens? With all the babying and coddling going on for 50+ years?

No, it’s not mostly mental illness. It may be that half of those who ARE mentally ill were pushed to it by the coddling they’ve received both by parents and society.

They’re not mentally ill, as much as being brainwashed and steeped in the cult of ignorance from birth by deranged socialist-democrats.

People who are raised from birth to be ignorant and illiterate are easy to control and manipulate.

I think you mean -1. And the sq rt of -1 is i, an imaginary number that doesn’t really exist.

“the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number,...”

Yeah. Journalism majors aren't big on coherent thought - or understanding mathematics.

Maybe: “the symbol encloses a number, and together represent a number that when multiplied by itself equals the number under the symbol”

Square-root does not work BELOW 0.

Sometimes it does, for certain purposes.

And even if it did represent a number, EVERY number when multiplied by itself equals another number.

Except for zero and one.

Just be sure you get a CCW for any poptart bitten into the shape of a weapon

You missed part of the story. For the full story you'd have to get a CCW for any poptart someone might think was bitten into the shape of a weapon.

The boy in question thought it looked like a mountain. A passing teacher mistook it for a gun-like shape.

The not equal sign is discrimatory.
The times sign x looks like something is crossed out.
The division sign is ....divisive.
The decimal point aka period...is an inappropriate use of a women’s health issue.
The equal by definition sign := looks like artillary .
The not sign ¬ looks like a gun.
And all cardinal numbers are banned. Can’t have catholic numbers in public school.

i exists. Just not in the set of real numbers. It exists on the imaginary axis and is used in many mathematical proofs.
