Florida Dem vows to introduce assault weapons ban in Congress next week

Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) on Wednesday said he intends to introduce legislation next week to ban assault weapons.

Ryan Schachter, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School whose brother was killed in last week’s shooting there, asked Deutch during a CNN town hall event what he would do to ensure he will be safe at school.

“We’re going to introduce legislation to make sure that assault weapons are illegal in every part of this country,” Deutch said, prompting applause from the audience. Deutch was referring to legislation from Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) that has dozens of Democratic cosponsors.

He said he supports local law enforcement and school staff to provide as much security and comfort as needed to make sure students feel safe.

"But beyond that, the best way for us to show that is to take action in Washington, in Tallahassee, to get these weapons of war off of our streets," Deutch said.

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., have spoken out in recent days after a gunman opened fire in their school on Feb. 14. The students have called on lawmakers to enact legislation that would curb gun violence and prevent school shootings.

Some have called for a ban on assault weapons after an AR-15 was used in last week's shooting and several previous mass shootings.

Other lawmakers have proposed raising the minimum age requirement to purchase certain firearms. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) expressed support Wednesday for such a proposal.

The White House hosted a listening session earlier Wednesday to gather feedback from parents, students and family members with a connection to past school shootings, including survivors of the Florida shooting.

"Not familiar with any larger rifles though I’ve held an old original AR-15 in Cambodia,..."

In '89, I was issued a rifle at Ft. Leonard Wood that had at least a lower receiver from one of those. That seemed pretty weird. It worked alright, although I'm guessing that it had newer parts in it and maybe a different upper.

There have been some advancements in .22 capacity that might interest you.

"I’m in favor of raising the age you can own a rifle. If you can’t drink until you’re 21, you can wait 3 years to own a firearm."

Yes. They can wait three years, if gangsters invade their home while their wives and babies are sound asleep in their beds. That's a horrible idea.

Besides, it's beside the point. Look into the reasons for their right to vote, and look at the following.

Is The Second Amendment Worth Dying For?
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3633354/posts

And if you violate their constitutional right, many of those under the age of 21 will soon comprise yet another large bloc to take away yours out of revenge. There will be more and more of them, as they cycle through that age range. We've helped the commies in politics to deprive too many subgroups of their Second Amendment right, and depriving more of them will eventually catch up with us.

It's past time to stop compromising.

Big difference between “owning” and purchasing through an FFL dealer. Lots of 12 year olds have rifles.

A semi-auto rifle is a better defensive weapon than an assault weapon. A bolt action rifle would more likely make a much more effective assault weapon.

Are there Lever Actions that fire .308 from a box?

Try a browning BLR 80 lever action. Holds five rounds in a detachable box magazine.

I wish someone could get on video tape a Democrat politician saying that the mass shooting at the high school was "a great opportunity" and "perfectly timed."

You just know Democrats pray for children to be shot in mass shootings to advance their agenda. I think they actually start to salivate when these things happen. Just think of the opportunity...

That was my thought. I’ll bet Roy Moore would have won in this environment.

But they do know they "have that thing in the back that makes it go up".

We should make the individual who sponsers this bill pay back the government for the total waste of time.

What Deutch and other dummies like him don’t want voters to know is that the most recent FBI statistics reveal is that annually there are roughly five times as many murders committed with knives as there are with assault weapons and other rifles.

Lose an election in Chicago, or Federal election in Illinois and sue to validate the vote.

"The main point I wanted to make is that most journalists and news talking heads don’t know shit about weapons, period."

Don't be so quick to paint with a broad brush, FRiend. I'm a reporter (radio). I also happen to be a veteran (19D Cav Scout), a Christian, a Conservative, a gun owner, a hunter, an avid shooter, and a red-blooded, rock ribbed, to the death American patriot. Yeah, most of my colleagues know little to nothing about weapons, but there are a few of us out here that do.

When the "fun" starts, I'm gonna have a target on my back, I know.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
