Does college turn people into liberals?

Does going to college make students into political liberals?

Conservative activists have claimed that universities brainwash students and indoctrinate them into believing a liberal ideology. The line of reasoning goes like this: Liberal college professors tell students “what to think,” and “what to think” is that conservatives and their positions are to be dismissed. A state lawmaker in Iowa has even suggested universities consider political affiliation in connection with hiring practices in order to balance out the distribution of political representation on the faculty.

Conservatives on campus feel outnumbered, given that about 60 percent of faculty identify as politically liberal. This imbalance supposedly hurts research, stifles open discourse and impairs overall education. Missing in this debate, however, is large-scale empirical evidence on how going to college actually impacts students’ attitudes.

I don’t think college does turn people into liberals. Cities might. My children go and listen to the silly professors rant about things and then they laugh at them. If there are people less cool than your parents, its college professors and high school teachers.

There is no doubt that is the intent.

The article would indicate they are not as successful as they would like to think.

It certainly gives its best effort...and is,more often than not, successful.Just consider that the most respected, esteemed, educator today (among his fellow educators,at least) is one William Ayers...of the 9/11/01 (early edition) of the New York Times fame.

...as well as,of course,of "guilty as hell, free as a bird" fame.

By the time I went to grad school, I was a conservative.

A liberal education with sound critical and reasoning skills, the hallmark of the human mind.

Shallow and rote thinking are reserved for ignorant people and deluded fanatics.

When you question the world and conventional wisdom, do you become a more enlightened and sober person.

No, a college education doesn’t turn all of us into liberals.

My great dad told me way back when that the profs would try to turn my head.

I was rebellious, thought he was hopelessly entrenched, and I went off and had my head turned, emptied out and stuffed with nonsense.

When I got out on my own, I voted for the unifier Clinton-—George Senior seemed a gilded dandy-—and in his first speech Clinton blamed whitey for all the ills of everything.

I was wrong, my dad was right, and he lived another three decades with a fellow right-winger in the family.

He never once yanked my chain about my having strayed.

No liberal professors give all their paychecks away to the government or the poor. In fact most make 6 digit salaries and live in million dollar homes.......

No. The students have already been indoctrinated in Marxism in grades K-12.

Conservatives on campus feel outnumbered, given that about 60 percent of faculty identify as politically liberal.

And another 25% are lying about their proclivities. No way there are more than 15% self-identified conservatives at any university outside of Hillsdale and a couple of others.

Yep, the same ways violent movies turn kids into shooters. (163 deaths in Black Panther ... but hey, that’s ok).

“Have you ever visited the Engineering Department?...”

Decades ago I had several friends in Engineering at...my alma mater. (I’m getting even more paranoid about PII.) One became a professor.

Most of what I say about universities and professors does not apply to real scientists and engineers. They tend to be what I term “default liberals.” They don’t really give a crap, so they go along to get along with the severely decompensated leftists in other departments.

I am profoundly awed by the sheer brainpower to be found here and there where men actually do things.
