Pistols use the energy of the shot to drive the “piston” back to automatically load a fresh cartridge. You're confused. The world pistol has been used to describe handguns going all the way back to the 1500s. You're talking about a semi-automatic mechanism, technology that wasn't invented until the late 1800s.
