He probably lost himself job to robots or AI. Nice of him to make the missus work.
The problem isnt the direct net of jobs. It is the speed of change of jobs is accelerating beyond what it has usually done in the past.
I religiously do not use self-checkouts. I don’t have to boycott them, I just don’t use them. Just like I can’t boycott the newspapers or cable TV, because I don’t use them.
I have a used automatic checkouts
few times at walmart, but that is because I can feed it my pennies and dimes. I spent 17.00 in pennies and dimes on Marvel Comics t-shirts last week and I didn’t want to tie up a line having a person count them. Other than that, if i’m in Home depot and there is only an automated checkout open, I go find a manager and force them to open a human cashier checkout. If the human operating four checkout stands comes and asks me to go through the line, I explain to them why I won’t, and they certainly understand.
When you artificially raise both the cost of labor, and the cost to employ labor, you get a loss of demand for labor.
