I think it started with the breakdown of the concept of honor. In the past, people would not want to ruin their good name and the name of their family. Honor was an important value. For that matter, an intact nuclear family was an important societal goal, but that's not the norm anymore.

About the same time honor died, discipline in schools and even among the adult population declined sharply. If it feels good, do it, became more the norm than self-discipline. All those "Victorian" social norms that people of our generation (I graduated in '64 too) threw out as old-fashioned were actually vital to societal well-being.

The gradual rise of ever more violent, trashy, vulgar entertainment hasn't helped.

Giving psychotropic drugs to young children, especially boys, has been a disaster, as has been the rise of destructive efforts to deny the differences between boys and girls. It used to be "boys will be boys," but now it's "boys can't be boys, but girls can."

Another cause is our complete failure to provide safe institutions for the genuine mentally ill among us, and provide reasonable, well regulated means to have someone committed against their will when truly necessary.

In part you answered your own question...

Guns were MUCH MORE AVAILABLE then. Schools had rifle teams. I shot an untethered .22 at Coney Island. I shot guns at Boy Scout Camp. Anyone who thinks that more gun restrictions now would help is oblivious to this.

We were raised to respect firearms not fear them. They were ordinary tools not mythologized demonic instruments. The rest of the answer is we were more likely to be raised with respect for others in general.

When you grew up, guns were still legal. Schools had gun clubs. You could still hunt squirrels in the city of Chicago. Nearly all children lived with both parents. There were hardly any illegals. There were a lot of veterans of WW1, WW2 and Korea running around who’d kill you if you messed with their kids. When they got on juries they’d find eahother acted in self-defense.

The main difference is that God is no longer allowed in the schools.

God. They took God out of everything and replaced the Lord with pure evil. Parents have stopped doing their part in taking children to Church to learn right from wrong. The majority of the youth of today are freaking scary and lack any morals as tv, video games and morally bankrupt propaganda education has raised them with very little naysaying or participation from parents.

You could not pay me to put a child in public school. People need to be able to send their children to the school of their choice and schools need to get back to basics. Better yet school them yourselves, they would stand a better chance.

My thinking is that we are a MUCH less civil society today specifically because we have allowed the LIEberals to strip the classroom of the Golden Rule, the Ten Commandments, the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.

Furthermore, we have allowed the LIEberals to remove any and all courses related to citizenship FRom Grammar, Jr. High and High Schools, and the “taught” American History is so PC as to be unrecognizable by my peers (1959 HS Grad).

We are, as Pogo so famously noted, THE enemy!

In addition, since 1965, unfettered immigration of people FRom Third World countries, both legal and illegal, has unquestionably diluted the society, changing the social construct and social contract in ways never considered by the LIEberal politicians who forced it upon us — who are now dead, of course! And who don’t have to deal with the horrible consequences of their insanity!

The solution to the problem will not be arrived at easily, nor will it, I fear, be unbloody.

If you want to know how much things have changed, consider this:

In 1962, my 15th year alive, I was in sophomore R.O.C.T. at Bellaire High School and issued an M-1 Garand (serial number IIRC 3,119,331 but it was not all matching) that was fully functional plus being originally issued in August of 1944 when World War Two was in its final year. It could have possibly been in Korea as it was refinished in 1953 at the Army's Springfield Armory. When I shot it, I normally put all 8 rounds into three to four inch groups into the bull at 100 yards with open sights. I kept it at home when not at school. Friday's were uniform day and I wore mine and openly carried my M-1 on the school bus to school for drill. I carried it, again openly, to all my classes and again back on the bus home when school was over.

Now try to imagine that being reality in this day and age?

Good question...good article...good sense. I graduated high school in 1963, so I can fully identify with your sentiments.

I, however, would like to add one, major, huge, factor in the demise of society since that time....CIVIL RIGHTS.

Don’t get me wrong, I think everyone deserves equal rights and a level playing field (citizens, anyway), but when “civil” rights replaced “Constitutional Rights”, it started downhill.

Civil rights allowed politicians to veer from the confines of the Constitution in order to mold people/groups into voting blocs to keep them in office.

INTEGRATION - Integration was a great idea, but, the rules were skewed, bars were lowered, and “special” rights for minorities were born. If we objected, cities were looted and burned, and scared politicians appeased the offending groups with extra candy and a federal num-num.

Black kids moved into white schools - no big problem, except for the fact that the divisive race mongers we right there, making huge deals out of even the slightest, perceived, infraction of “civil rights”.

Years of discipline in white schools started dying, because to punish a black student for the same offensive behavior, was “racism”. Before long, whites said, “If you’re not going to punish black kids by the book, then then you’re not going to punish the white kids either.” (paraphrasing).

Add one for anarchy.

Vote-hungry politicians were a high tension spring waiting for any chance to appease any minority group for any reason, granting them whatever special rights they could conjure to placate their behavior, instead of resorting to any meaningful punishment (racism, you know).

It wasn’t that long before the new word, “racism” was recognized as a word more powerful to blacks than “SHAZAM” was to Captain Marvel. It brought them powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal white folks, pushing the two major, American rule books - the Constitution, and the Ten Commandments - into the dusty corner.

We had an instant population of spoiled children - both adult and non-adult. Everyone wanted their way. Every time a “stopping point” arose, it only too the threat of a riot, or burning, to hand the ball back to the minorities.

The Socialist/Communist thing was in full swing, and they saw the dream opportunity to “divide and conquer”, and a house divided, cannot stand. Tantrum riots and marches were happening as often as they thought of a new freebie they wanted/needed, and the growing liberal (read:socialist/communist) authorities capitulated.

This was working good, for them. Meanwhile, the whole of society was sliding into a sea of mediocrity and anger. The more “civil” rights replaced “Constitutional” rights, the angrier the citizens became; the angrier the citizens became, and more violent the minorities became...the seeds of a new civil war were planted.

Over the years - based on the “civil/special” rights vs Constitutional rights model, every special interest saw their opening to cash in. There was feminism, gay rights, etc, etc etc...all claiming the basic tenants, and special rights...the greedy congress and presidents again capitulated.

It became a cancer, feeding upon itself to grow, and grow. It got expensive to grant these special rights, so taxes were increased. All American citizens were expected to foot the bill for a very small group based on the convolution of history and a growing, National guilt trip.

Crying, wilting, liberals paraded every sad story they could find before us on the six o’clock news. The same people who got behind these crybabies were like the same ones pushing illegal immigration today...it’s all about the votes...always was, always will be.

Television and movies played their part, as well. If nothing else, it added to the dream of every American boy and girl to be a “star”, or at least the “center of attention”. Everyone wanted fame, and fortune - after all, TV made it look like everyone on America was rich, compared to us poor slobs who were working and paying the bills.

Pressure on people elevated, anxiety rose, and a new, National solution was found - drugs. If you couldn’t handle life sober, somehow, you thought you could handle it perpetually stoned. But, when the drugs and money ran out, the problems were still there, waiting patiently, with a 120 day late charge. Deficits were deafening.

TV and movies numbed the shock levels in people. The wilder, and more radical - the goryer and more bloody, the more tickets sold at the box office. Sure, the cowboy shows of the 50’s showed people shot, but they didn’t show blood and innards splattering all over the screen.

It’s escalated and all from “civil/special” rights, rights that courts and Congress has no right to grant. Gross manipulation and interpretation of the Constitution, instead of the written word, ruled the country. Instead of running things based on our original, founding document, the radical left wanted to run it as they thought it should be. One of Obama’s chief complaints about the Constitution was that it is a highly “restrictive” document...which is saying in minority-speak, it grants no special rights for color, race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

I’m getting tired, and wrote this all in one continuous gush of thoughts, so don’t be surprised if you encounter misspellings, and grammar errors.

But, I was there at the (relative) beginning of all this civil/special rights business. In fact, my class was the last segregated class in our school.

But the “land of the brave” has disappointed me; we were not brave on our own home front. We rolled over like trained Chihuahuas anytime any minority/special interest group whimpered, and we have lost the battle.

We should have said, ok...equal rights under the Constitution...and “that’s it”. But...no...there were votes involved.

Greedy and power-hungry politicians brought us to where we are today, and insofar as they still hold the key to the gates, I don’t see a way out.

So What's the Difference Between Now and When I Grew Up?

I believe the difference between NOW and YESTERYEAR is that today we are seeing a MAJOR and MASSIVE BREAKDOWN in CIVILITY.

Much of it has been brought about and amplified through the DESENSITIZATION of our younger generation through incidental things such as movies, video games, etc.

Because we had fathers that would beat the sh*t out of us if we pulled some of the stunts today’s yutes pull to get attention. It wasn’t called tough love back then. But correction was tough on our physical behinds and mental attitudes.

Girls and boys were treated/punished differently depending on the circumstances and the severity of the offence. There was no equality - boys were boys and girls were girls. As a minor, I never knew transexual persons existed.

Until one legally became an adult, mom and dad ruled the roost. That’s just the way it was back then. While you were a minor, they legally owned you and controlled your life. It was their responsibility to prepare you to enter society and be able to survive as a responsible adult. There were exceptions of course, but maintaining the family unit was essential to raising “good” kids. Even back then the prisons (adult and juvenile) were mostly composed of people from broken homes or mentally retarded people.

Today’s yutes have privileges and rights we didn’t have until we reached adulthood. And government intervention was minimal compared to today when parents have no rights in family matters. Yes, there was child abuse or a breakdown in the family caused by alcohol or drugs or something else, but kids could pursue other avenues (churches, grandparents, neighbors, friends, etc.) to find relief from these situations.

Sadly, today’s yutes are being raised by a village of idiots who have replaced common sense, religion, and the family unit. They have destroyed the culture, language, and border security we once enjoyed in our nation. Pray that GOD will bless our nation and remember where two or more are gathered in his name, He is there.

When I was young we could not watch TV without permission and it was typically a family event. The 3 Stooges were not allowed because it was violent. Now, if the TV is your babysitter, your child will have seen and heard thousands of gunshots and hundreds of murders before their first day of kindergarten.
