Not necessarily. HCl in concentration releases chlorine gas under some circumstances. While not particularly malodorous, Cl2 is extremely corrosive. And HCl fumes themselves aren’t exactly avatar of roses.

Oh, I know, I just found a couple dropper bottles in the shop someone had squirreled away (we use it for sample preservation). Their rubber had hardened and cracked and my clue something had gone bad was the approximately foot diameter sphere of corrosion on the rack.
If you’re going to dissolve a body, HCl is going to stink less. Additionally (and apparently the dissolvers are dumbasses) when the body is dissolved with HCl you can balance the pH to neutral with a few scoops of lime. If you use lye, you’ll have to have muriatic available anyway to balance.
What people usually miss is that a little bit of concentrated acid can make a hell of a lot of highly acidic water. A 5 gallon jug dumped into 500+ gallons of water will get that water down in the 1 range. If, say a coworker did that, to a tank of water that was going into a sanitary line, because “but dude, it’s diluted now”, you have to find a sack of lime really fast...

isn’t it a bit funny how it was never an idea discussed until the si-fi movie came out? Wouldn’t the acid probably be a controlled item needing a license to purchase?
In New York at the Standard Hotel I believe, they were pouring 55 gal. drums muriatic acid down the drain. Muriatic acid is used to clean swimming pools but it takes less than a gallon to do each time and should not be done too many times as it would ruin the pool’s surface.
Sorry the hotel that was pouring acid down the drain was in Los Angeles.
