Grassley tells Attorney General Sessions his memo doesn't comply with law
CBS News ^ | 2/6/2018 | kathryn watson

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley says a recent memo written by the attorney general to Justice Department heads that instructs them not to communicate with Congress without pre-approval from the Justice Department Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) is almost certainly illegal.

The Iowa Republican told Jeff Sessions in a letter Tuesday that his recent memo "does not appear to comply with existing law," and he asked Sessions to revise the memo accordingly. Sessions, who apparently told the heads of DOJ divisions that they should not communicate with "senators, representatives, congressional committees, or congressional staff without advance coordination and consultation with OLA" — has made cracking down on leaks a key part of his tenure at the DOJ. He held an entire press conference on the subject last year, saying, "This culture of leaking must stop."

Grassley, who has prioritized whistleblower protections in his time in the Senate, said that while he appreciated DOJ's efforts to speak from a coordinated front, he fears Sessions' letter may violate the law and prevent critical information from reaching Congress. Grassley pointed out that Sessions' memo doesn't address the rights of DOJ employees "to make protected disclosures directly to Congress."

I suspect Sessions is either old and stupid or the Deep State has something on him so he’s terrified of violating their orders. Who would hire Rosenstine on the recommendation of Elijah Cummings?

Maybe Sessions is thinking of those who would be contacting the likes of Adam Schiff.

Not defending Sessions, what he has done to President Trump is unforgiveable.

One morning we will wake up to a surprise from President Trump: he finally will have fired Jeff Sessions as AG. It will come without warning and trigger the usual howls of “treason” and “obstruction” - and calls for more investigations re: Russia (even though Sessions has recused himself from all things Russia, thanks to a Minnesota senator who is no longer a senator).

Trump likes surprises and that’s what will happen.
At least this is my hope...

Trump’s firing of Comey is all Mueller’s been able to come up with so far. It’s being portrayed as obstruction. If Trump adds to that the firing of Sessions, he’ll breathe new life into the Mueller investigation. What already appears to be a never-ending witch hunt really would go on forever then.

The tag team of Sessions and Rosenstein sabotaged Trump royally. No two Democrats could have done half as well.

Aren’t there any lawyers over there, at the Justice Department? Someone might venture some counsel to the Attorney General on how to protect whistleblower rights as he attempts to stop leaks. “ This isn’t Alabama, little doggie “. 🐶

Not a good image when a Senator has to tell the AG what the law is.

Sessions really needs to get it together or get out.

Sessions Memo? I didn’t know a hologram could write a memo.

He uses one of those newfangled hard holograms which works to present the illusion he is actually in DC and not on an extended vacation as so many suspect. The palm trees are hard to edit out, but once in a while if you look really really close you’ll see one.

”...Grassley continued. "The law is clear that any non-disclosure agreement or policy, including any policy that purports to restrict the communications of federal employees, must contain a clear exception for lawful whistleblowing.”

Well if it’s “clear” then why does it need to be specifically addressed?

Jeff Sessions is not working for Trump or us. He’s been diverted. He is a liability.

consider that the “leaks” were coming from the Deep State side to the Democrats.

Yup. My first thought.

Do we really want Obama stealth holdovers in the DOJ on Schiffs speed dial?

I understand where he is coming from for DOJ leaked like a sieve. However, the Senator is right.

I would have had a highly publicized termination (that called “firing”) of several leakers and then as I identified Obama supporters, those who donated money and spoke/wrote in his favor, and fired them too. The leaking would have stopped. They are all over paid and many not needed.

“They are all over paid and many not needed.”

No leftard should ever have any voice in anything, not even to the extent of cleaning the toilets in the Hoover Building.
