...China and the United States all vying for influence and control in a part of the world that, this time, is quite literally cold.
With more than half of all Arctic coastline along its northern shores, Russia has long sought economic and military dominance in part of the world where as much as $35 trillion worth of untapped oil and natural gas could be lurking. Now China is pushing its way into the Arctic, announcing last month its ambitions to develop a "Polar Silk Road" through the region as warming global temperatures open up new sea lanes and economic opportunities at the top of the world.

China and Russia are weak at oil fracking, so investors there can make a case for going after expensive, extreme-weather conventional oil plays, instead.
The USA, in contrast, can obtain *all* of the oil we need via domestic oil fracking.
Technology. We’ve got it. Resources: we’ve got them.
Y’all have fun drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean. It’s cold there. Brrr...
I was formulating a similar answer.
Things break. Things go wrong. Bad place to have an accident.
I would like to compete but we are flat broke.
Where is Canada in all this?

Please see #7, just below your question.
The US seriously needs to pick a side, China or Russia, before they team up against us.
By contrast the Russians have over 40 operational ice breakers many of them Heavy (breaks 22 feet of ice a speed), and a dozen or so nuclear powered ones.
China unveils plan for 'Polar Silk Road' across the Arctic
China has outlined its ambitions to extend President Xi Jinping's signature Belt and Road Initiative to the Arctic by developing shipping lanes opened up by global warming.
Russia has been working to monetize the Arctic for a long time.
Russia’s northern coastline stretches along a long stretch of the Arctic. They claim those Arctic territories for development. With warmer temperatures in the area since the year 2000, the Russians are taking advantage of the melting ice to move right in (legally) and explore the region, which is what we should be doing off the Alaska coastlines but instead we’re crying over polar bears stranded on an ice flow. Russia on the other hand is wisely moving forward like a bunch of Vikings, ready to begin the mineral harvest and Make Russia Great Forever.

Apparently the Pentagon is not concerned:
The Pentagon released a National Defense Strategy that for the first time in more than a decade does not mention global warming as a security threat.

>I live in Alaska, and I second this motion. Great post.
Russia’s foothold in the Arctic is like 90 years old. US is simply absent in that and it hasn’t started with Obama.

Already picked circa 1970. One of a few alliances which is carefully maintained to this day.
