What is "gaslighting"?

I had to look up the definition myself, as I wasn't exactly clear on the meaning. Here goes:

The term comes from the 1944 movie Gaslight, in which a man "manipulates his wife to the point where she thinks she is losing her mind."

From Psychology Today: Gaslighting is a form of persistent manipulation and brainwashing that causes the victim to doubt her or himself, and ultimately lose her or his own sense of perception, identity, and self-worth. ... At its worst, pathological gaslighting constitutes a severe form of mind-control and psychological abuse.

Thanks, I’d never heard the term used.

I realize our towns and cities used to have gas street lights, and private homes too. The connection is either vague or nonexistent.
