Justices Kennedy and Ginsburg plan to continue into 2019 and 2020

Supreme Court justices Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Ginsburg have announced plans to keep hiring law clerks for the next few years, which means they aren't retiring any time soon.

Ginsburg, affectionately known by her fans as the "Notorious RBG," has already hired four clerks for the October 2018 term and four clerks for the October 2019 term, which ends in June 2020, according to CNN.  The news hints that Ginsburg is planning to stay on for the coinciding terms.

Meanwhile, Kennedy's recent law clerk hires are also telling.

According to Above the Law, which first reported the law clerk news, he's selected four clerks for the October 2018 term.  The news may signal [that] the court's usual swing vote isn't planning to retire at the end of the current term as rumored.

But both Ginsburg, 84, and Justice Kennedy, 81, are very old and, even worse, in not very good health.

Ginsburg was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999 and underwent surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  During the process, she did not miss a day on the bench.  Physically weakened after the cancer treatment, Ginsburg began working with a personal trainer.

On February 5, 2009, she again underwent surgery related to pancreatic cancer.  Ginsburg's tumor was discovered at an early stage.  She was released from a New York City hospital on February 13 and returned to the bench when the Supreme Court went back into session on February 23, 2009.  On September 24, 2009, Ginsburg was hospitalized in Washington[, D.C.] for lightheadedness following an outpatient treatment for iron deficiency and was released the following day.

On November 26, 2014, she had a stent placed in her right coronary artery after experiencing discomfort while exercising in the Supreme Court gym .  [Citations and links omitted.]

Agreed. She will die in office rather than retire.

Can they shove enough Duracells up her butt to keep her bird heart squeaking for 8 more years? I don’t think so. Notorious DOA.

Neither of them want Trump appointing their replacement. Their Leftist social circles would make pariahs of them AND their families if that happened. Or possibly do worse in revenge.

But once ONE of them goes (probably feet first) and the Court is swung to the right, there is much less incentive for the other to stay.

Whichever leftist justice leaves first will trigger an exodus.

she will stroke out and still not retire. She thinks the country needs her. It’s hard to get a zealot to back down.

They will attempt to hang in indefinitely, we’ll see.

Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,

This is the Democrat/Left’s primary concern with President Trump. They simply cannot abide President Trump replacing any one of the three USSC dinosaurs (these two and Stevens) — let alone two or even all three! — lest they lose control of all three branches. This is why they are in a sheer panic and beyond rationality in their quest to get rid of President Trump by gaining control of Congress this year ... it’s the USSC.

So Breyer, Ginsburg, and Kennedy are all over 80, and Sotomayor is potentially an ill diabetic.

You never know, but it would seem unlikely, that all four will still be on the court after the 2020 election.

When you’re over 80, your day planner is best done in 15 minute increments.

It would be interesting for Trump to have 2-3 more picks. That’s a game changer.

I’d like to hear God laugh just once when I’m not the butt of the joke.

Same predicament here. I hate being a prick/curmudgeon but I have to for longevity purposes.

I’m surprised they would say that, after accumulating all that evidence against Hillary Clinton. If those two justices were no longer around, Hillary would probably get away for good.
