Feuding Democrats and Republicans in Congress are trying to dodge blame for a paralyzing standoff over immigration and showing few signs of progress on negotiations needed to end a government shutdown that stretched into a second day Sunday.
The finger-pointing played out in rare weekend proceedings in both the House and Senate, where lawmakers were eager to show voters they were actively working for a solution or at least actively making their case why the other party was at fault. The scene highlighted the political stakes for both parties in an election-year shutdown whose consequences are far from clear.
On Sunday morning, President Donald Trump upped the ante by tweeting that Senate Republicans should go "nuclear" if the government shutdown continues.
"Great to see how hard Republicans are fighting for our Military and Safety at the Border. The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked," Trump tweeted.
"If stalemate continues, Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget, no C.R.s!"

Don’t forget Rand Paul, he was a no vote.
The nuke option would be a win for Trump in showing that the pubbies reversed the shutdown. True a few RINO anti Trumpers would vote against it but there would be a enough redstate dems to offset the turncoats.
Lankford, Graham, Gardner, Thune, Rubio, Flake, Corker, Alexander, Murkowsky, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Cornyn, Cochran, Collins, Sasse, Kennedy, Burr, Tillis, Shelby, Ernst are all Cheap Labor Express stooges.
They’ll have enough votes to kill it if they need them.
They want to force Trump into an amnesty.
Some amnesty, no matter how small.
They’ll take it a little at a time if that’s all they can get.
Now, youre catching on!
Welcome aboard :-)
Oh, another consideration for you...dont think for one second that they (Dims) wouldnt do the same rule change, given the opportunity.
To hell with ratchetting up the pressure on the shitbag democrats. This has been the best option all along and the GOPe have been using the 60 vote BS as a stalling tactic.
Do away with the rule and go back to simple majority for all votes as it was intended to be by the founders.
The fascist democrats would do it if they were in our position so change it already you RINO bastards.
Hey chuck, you lost Trump won, get over it. Oh, and by the way, you dont get to make the rules. Your party Will get to pay this bill.
There ya go!
Besides referring to the military, and the border, the issue about funding healthcare for children should be included every single time. Rats are supposed to be “for the children”; shame them in to helping the children.
“Does the shutdown affect the illegals?”
Maybe, in some way(s). But it was announced a day or two ago that actual DHS agents are personally escorting illegals across the border. Then the agents are accompanying the illegals on flights as they’re being distributed to cities throughout America. So it sounds like some DHS agents are working with the deep state as coyotes, so the shutdown isn’t stopping any of that.
“Ever tried firing a government employee?”
Nope, but then again, I’m not President Trump.
Republicans cant even get 51 votes. McCain, Flake and Graham will be no’s
Completely agree with the sentiment. However, there is nothing nuclear about this. It's already the way legislation is passed.
Proceeding with legislation this way would likely lead to a filibuster in the Senate. So what? Make the Democrats go through the pain of a real filibuster. Then pass a real budget anyhow. And hold all Congressmen in Congress until it's done!
I think Blunt (MO) is, too.
How about no tax refund checks until the government is back in business?
“Nuclear option”...Awesome...I nominate NYC, LA, and Chicago for starters...
The R jersey Democrats are using the 60 votes to hide behind so they don’t have to expose themselves.
There are not 51 votes for the House CR.
Too many of the R jersey Senators are Amnesty Senators.
Yes. Senator McConnell? This means you!
Prefer the term “Constitutional option”... 60 votes is not required
I thought this might be the plan “A” if a shutdown happens and the dims will agree to another C/R to avoid the nuke opt. and to postpone DACA for the short term and then repeat .
You are right, could not remember them all.
Easier to list the ones who side with the citizens and the rule of law.
Cotton, Grassley, Perdue, Paul and maybe Cruz, he has been uncharacteristically quiet.
Shall we #UnchainTheConstitution?
