Kelly calls some of Trump's campaign pledges on immigration, wall 'uninformed,'
The Washington Post ^ | January 17, 2018 | Ed O'Keefe

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly told Democratic lawmakers Wednesday that the United States will never construct a physical wall along the entire stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border and that some of President Trump’s campaign promises on immigration were “uninformed.”

The comments put Kelly at odds with Trump, who repeatedly said during his presidential campaign that he would build a border wall that Mexico would pay for, not U.S. taxpayers.

Kelly met with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) and Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.), who chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, at the U.S. Capitol in his fourth formal face-to-face encounter with Hispanic lawmakers, who have been deeply critical of Trump’s position on immigration policy.

During the meeting, Kelly repeatedly said that Trump supports enacting permanent legal protections for young immigrant “dreamers” and that he has helped the president evolve on immigration policy. But the meeting ended with no resolution to what exactly the administration wants in exchange for authorizing permanent legal protections for the at least 690,000 people enrolled in the program, according to several attendees.

White House aides didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

As the meeting began, Kelly said he had asked to meet with the group at the urging of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has been in frequent contact with Kelly over the last several months and told him that the group is critical to reaching a deal.

Hoyer told Kelly later that the views expressed by lawmakers in the room represent “the will of the Democratic Caucus” — a reminder that House Democrats overwhelmingly support protecting dreamers and strongly oppose Trump’s calls for stricter border protections.

Hoyer told Kelly later that the views expressed by lawmakers in the room represent “the will of the Democratic Caucus” — a reminder that House Democrats overwhelmingly support protecting dreamers and strongly oppose Trump’s calls for stricter border protections.

Astounding. They want to legalize the Dreamers while simultaneously not doing anything to secure the border so that we end up with more Dreamers. They don't care about protecting the American people.

“I worked to get the six-month extension of DACA. I ordered that. I managed that. And everyone has thanked me for that,” he told the group.

Oh really?

Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.), the original sponsor of the Dream Act that would permanently legalize at least 690,000 dreamers, asked Kelly to clarify Trump’s definition of a border wall.

“Certain things are said during the campaign that are uninformed,” Kelly said.

No, no one expected a wall over mountains or rivers or other natural barriers. Nothing he said was uninformed.

“A concrete wall from sea to shining sea” is not going to happen, Kelly said. Instead, “a physical barrier in many places” is what the administration is requesting. Kelly used the term “physical barrier” several times during the meeting, attendees said.

Kelly goes on to say that there are of course natural barriers but says we need a barrier for 700 of the 2,100 miles. That leaves 1,400 miles without a barrier. I don't know how he defines barrier either. He said concrete would be good in "certain places" and manpower and drones for other parts. Based on my read, if you need manpower, then people may be able to cross. It seems to me you would need a wall.

Kelly also said that there will be no wall “that Mexico will pay for.”

Oh really?

After serving as homeland security secretary and commander of U.S. military forces in Latin America, Kelly told lawmakers that he has helped Trump “evolve on issues of the wall.”

“I had a lot to do with that,” he said of Trump’s change in position regarding border security.

“He campaigned against DACA,” Kelly said of Trump, but since then, “he’s lightened up.”

Oh really?

Once the issue of dreamers and border security is resolved, Kelly said during the meeting, he expects the administration and Congress to work together on the future of people with temporary protected status. In recent weeks, the administration has announced the end of temporary protections for hundreds of thousands of people from El Salvador, Haiti and Nicaragua who are living in the United States after natural disasters or violence in those countries.

Oh really?

Kelly had to know these folks would sprint to the WaPo to spill. The article also notes that Kelly and Kirstjen Nielsen "have been privately complaining" about Trump's plans to build a wall." That's not how they sound publicly, but Kelly's comments in the meeting today where he brags about making Trump "evolve" on DACA, seems to say we need less wall than we probably do, and then says we are going to permanently seek a path for those with TPS are not things that compute with what Trump promised during the campaign or that help him with his base at all when they get out there.

I wonder what Trump would think of this.

Either

1. Trump has a knack for hiring utterly disloyal people (perhaps because there IS no one in Washington who knows the meaning of the word).

or . . .

2. This is fake news, which the scumbag media is simply throwing out there in yet another attempt to portray the Trump administration in a bad light.

Or

3. Trump's supporters know that he never promised a wall from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific. They understood the wall is to be built in specific locations, maybe three to four hundred miles.

That is how the demonrats mischaracterized the Trump promise.

That’s the thing. It’s either the Dems/media are lying/misrepresenting (totally possible) or Kelly is going against Trump when Trump isn’t there (also possible).

If this is not fake news (which I hope it is) then Kelly is showing himself to being a self-important narcissist.

General Kelly,

When in your military career did you ever tell a reporter that your Commander was “ uninformed”?

In fact. When did you ever agree to meet with a pack of civilians antagonistic ( to put it mildly) to the Commander who hired you and trusted you as a gatekeeper?

I heard it and he was clearly referring to natural barrier exclusion from a physical wall— like the peak of a mountain or raging rapids. I dont agree with his misconception on the desert)He said the minimum needed is $20 billion. I understand the WALL better in that context and I think Kelly . I think he was fine in his position. I support General Kelly and as long as we get 100% of the wall for 100% of the daca deal, chain reduced to nuclear family , no more lottery ever, Im in

The United States can never build a complete canal from across Panama from sea to sea, over mountains, lakes, rivers.

What a putz.

We can build it, we need to build, we should build it. Sea to Sea. Complete. No gaps for any reason. Access roads for easy patrols. Tunnel monitors. A real, physical, manned, comprehensive, modern border. That is what is required.

The border is 1,988 miles long. There aren’t that many natural barriers that would mean only a few hundred miles of wall. I suspect you don’t live near the border.

There is a third, rather unpleasant possibility here.

It’s possible that Trump always knew that there would not (or could not) be a complete, physical southern border wall. And he just said that to win votes.

Is that probable? No. But it is possible. The last politician I fully trusted was Ronald Reagan.
