I don't like that the chick is named "Micheal" that's a fetish of the producer who gives all his female protagonists dude's names. It's not worst name though, reminds me of Miss Michael Learned. She's Black, so what? I don't love her but she's not a terrible character.
The Klingon deep cover agent may be played by a Pakistani Brit (not "Arab" and so what? I didn't even notice till I saw his name) but the character is named ASH TYLER, real "Muslim" name eh? There is no Islam, only nutty Klingon religion. Actor does not equal character. The Klingon makeup (which I don't like) is so heavy I had no inkling it was same actor playing him in Klingon form.
Of course I didn't care for there being a fag couple but it was to be expected, I'm surprised 2001 Enterprise didn't go there. I actually don't mind Wilson Cruz's character (spoiler alert: he's dead Jim, it's whathisname, the dude Spacey tried to screw, that's who I can't stand. I never once noticed Cruz being in a "tight" uniform that "leaves nothing to the imagination", if the author is dwelling on that well.....The character is named Hugh Culber, I never once wondered if he's supposed to be blacktino and neither has anyone on the show. Torres, the half-Klingon chick from Voyager was ostensibly Latina, Latina Klingon, talk about shark jumping. I don't recall her "acting White", she was mostly just a *itch. I don't know what people the author is citing that allegedly care/complain about this, nor do I care what they think or say or see what it has to do with me.
The chubby cadet is an ok character and is not "a genius at every type of science".
Roddenberry's vision was a world of perfect humans and no conflict, good luck making a show about that (TNG season 1, would have been swiftly cancelled if that had continued), he did almost as much harm to his own creation as George Lucas did to his, the man was a pinko wasn't he? If I were his shade I'd be much more pissed off at the NuMovies and Voyager and Enterprise mostly wasting their good premises than this.
An aside, waiting for the bus today there there a couple of Hispanic dealers talking about their corner and cops "popping" them, and then this Black fairy pranced up, he made Wilson Cruz look like John Wayne. I waited for the next one.
I almost did a coffee spit take on your 'naturally a bit of the PC' statement-- That's like saying Al Sharpton has a bit of Liberal.
However, Imp, since I express my opinions starting back in May in my ' 'Star Trek: Discovery': Decoding the 1st Trailer of Trek's New Chapter' thread that finally had me canceling my CBS Access account just after the series premiered, it is a mute point for me.
Yet it pains me some to find it even minimally acceptable to a conservative such as yourself, but I will fight to the death for your right to discuss, view and even enjoy it.
Move along smartly now; nothing to see here...
SJWs are frequently unable to distinguish the actor from the character, as you pointed out. If Culber is played by a black Latino, then he must be a black Latino. Maybe that's why they are whining about him being the first "Hispanic" on Star Trek - they've also failed to notice that the Discovery's captain's surname is Lorca, but because he's played by an English actor, he doesn't count.
