Its former chief executive, who left in disgrace last year as shares plunged, was revealed to have got a £600,000 bonus while leading the construction empire to its doom.

His pay and perks in 2016 totalled £1.5million.

The company, which was also a major provider of services to hospitals and schools, went bankrupt with debts of £1.5billion after banks finally pulled the plug.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s government is under pressure to explain why ministers awarded construction company Carillion 1.3 billion pounds ($1.8 billion) of new contracts after it was known to be in financial difficulty.
Britain’s opposition Labour and Liberal Democrat parties called for an investigation into the government’s dealings with Carillion before the company collapsed.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn argued that public service contracts should have never been awarded to private companies in the first place.

In a video posted on Twitter, Corbyn called Carillion's collapse a "watershed moment," adding that it was time to "end the rip-off privatization policies that have done serious damage to our public services and fleeced the public of billions of pounds."
