I’ve visited N. Michigan for vacations. Very pretty area. Love the dunes. But, I don’t think I could live anywhere that has signs stating that certain roads are closed in the winter because it’s too much bother to keep them plowed.

That means LOTS OF SNOW.

We get about 130 inches/year. We live on a road that is part seasonal and have only missed work once because of snow in 4 years. Seasonal roads are pretty infrequent.

We got 18 inches overnight one time. The snow here is really nothing compared to what the east gets. Besides which it is powder and we use a broom to clean off the cars. Or your hands.

It's the subzero temps - about 6-7 days/winter of them, that are seriously daunting. I still remember my car starting at -42 one morning. Don't like those much when they happen. Haven't seen it that cold for several years.

Thanks for coming to visit us! We moved here 4 years ago and have no regrets. We are madly in love with the people, lakes, and food here.

No hurricanes. No earthquakes. No sharks.

When I lived in the White Mountains of Arizona, they kept the roads plowed...until the money ran out. Then the plows stopped running. Things were fine until early February, then I learned how to chain up really fast.

I always thought that was the practical method of governance possible. Budget and spend what you have, then stop spending.
