Well of course they can’t speak English because there is no need or incentive for them to learn it.
Here in LA, everything is in Spanish. TV stations, radio stations, DMV paperwork, welfare and WIC paperwork, road signs, bathroom signs, billboards, etc. Heck, even the public schools in LA teach illegal alien children in Spanish. Even the courts and social services provide full time translators which makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to get a job with the city or county unless you speak Spanish. English is practically a foreign language around here. No joke.
I have read about Korean immigrants in Los Angeles learning Spanish as a second language in addition to their Korean language. They find that Spanish is easier to learn than English, and in Los Angeles there is no need to speak English.
I can back up every single thing you have said. Americans are a minority in California.
You speak the truth. Some of the TV commercials, even on major networks, are totally in Spanish. Announcements over stores’ PA systems are in Spanish, billboards are in Spanish without even an English translation underneath, I get telemarketing calls in Spanish, I’ve gotten bills in the mail that are in Spanish, etc. If you channel surf, you have to go through dozens of Spanish language TV channels. Where I work, one of the things we do is provide interpreters, and it’s not at all unusual for someone who’s been living in the U.S. for decades to need a Spanish language interpreter. The people who are shamed, inconvenienced, and denied jobs here are the few Angelenos who only speak English. I have people ask me how I’ve lived in LA this long without learning Spanish. But it would be “racist” and “insensitive” to suggest an illegal learn English.
I don’t know if people in other areas have any idea how truly bad it is here, or that it’s coming to them.
