LAPD arrests man on suspicion of making deadly swatting call to Wichita police
The Wichita Eagle ^ | December 30, 2017 | Nichole Manna

Los Angeles police have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of making the swatting call that ended with a Wichita man being killed by police.

Tyler Barriss was arrested Friday afternoon, according to KABC.

Booking records for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office say he was arrested at 3:15 p.m. for a felony.

Barriss is accused of reporting a fake homicide and hostage situation to the Wichita Police Department just after 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

The practice is called "swatting" and happens when someone makes a call to a police department with a false story of an ongoing crime – often with killing or hostages involved – in an attempt to draw a large number of police officers to a particular address.

Exactly. Just like the guy in the hallway in Mesa Arizona. You could tell by the video he was scared half out of his mind. People who obey the law and have no dealings with guns pointed at them don’t think straight when guns are being pointed at them. I’ve told my sons to just freeze....spread eagle. If the cop is going to shoot you, he’s going to have to do it with you not moving a muscle and your hands as far away from your body as possible. That way there is a smaller chance of YOU screwing up.

It’s not like they’ve given us any reason to unconditionally trust them lately.

I might go as far as Reagan did with the Soviets, “trust but verify”.

Makes me sad, it does.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

I think the police are as responsible for this man's death as the guy who called them.

Unfortunately the innocent bystander is dead, through no fault of his own.

Justice would say that both the cop and the perpetrator need to be punished. Reality says it won't happen that way.

Let's hope justice is served here.

"Most have no military background but instead want to act like they are in the military.

I've been very fortunate in the few interactions I've had with police. I've never been mistreated by a cop. That said, I've never been comfortable with the paramilitary nature (what seems to be the mindset) of SWAT units I've observed, and I saw less battle rattle on the marines in Fallujah.

on the force no longer care about protecting and serving but instead are a bunch of power hungry jerks. Most have no military background but instead want to act like they are in the military. This is the opinion of a cop.
= = = = = = = = = = = =
How true.
The ‘powers that be’ figured the WHOLE FORCE should be brains first then brawn.

We grew up where the police ‘intimidated’ you just by looking at them. Most were ex Military, had Weight & Height restrictions- when I ‘looked into’ LEO after the USN I started with the State Police and was told to go put some weight on as my 6’ 148 lbs did not make a good representation for a Virginia State Trooper.

The show ‘Cops’ stresses ‘I just want to get home safe’...understand what he means, I was in Road Construction and I wanted to get home safe every night also but didn’t spend time lamenting the situation.

At least the Military trained LEO has (or had) the rush towards the fire or gunfire mentality, not stand back and wait for some ‘suit’ to assess the situation etc.

How ANY person who goes by mottoes ‘to protect & serve’ etc can stand by and surround a school with kids inside and hear gunfire and WAIT for orders to advance is beyond me.

May as well just PAY a Sheriff and round up a posse when he thinks it is needed.

Like ‘they’ say- my job is investigate the crime AFTER the fact - so I read that as ‘You are on your own till I get there’.....

“Hang the murdering SOB.”

You mean the cop, right?

This bogus call DID NOT make the cop shoot anyone. The cop did that part all by himself.

No, I’m talking about the guy that thought it would be funny to send an amped up SWAT team to this guys house. I think the cop needs prosecuted also but this guy instigated this whole affair.

““What gives the cops the right to open fire? Why didn’t they give him the same warning they gave us? That cop murdered my son,” Lisa Finch, told the Eagle.”

“There were officers posted at every corner of the house when Andrew Finch opened the door and walked out toward police.”

I read yesterday, and I thought it was from the mother, that he was shot THROUGH the screen door and that the police took the screen door with them.

Everyone keeps talking like the cop that shot walked up to the front door, NOT.

“the officer on the north side fired one round,”

read the story there.

I thought I read somewhere yesterday that the caller had blocked his phone ID.

Hey it Hugh O’Brien as Wyatt Earp! Back before the days where facial hair was cool again and only bad guys wore mustaches. Little skinny mustaches.

The perp is being held on a fugitive warrant. Next step extradition to Kansas. There he will receive justice and punishment.

Earp was out of law enforcement in 1882 or so. Of course he’s totin’ a ‘92 winchester. Back in the 1950s accuracy was less than secondary.

The ‘ Tombstone ‘(movie) Earp look was more authentic.

Wow, thanks for sharing, this is some story. I wonder what they will charge this man with, reckless endangerment? And I do NOT know what the heck was up with the cop who shot the guy. It’s all a very messed up tale and just shows that one never knows what tomorrow or the next 10 minutes may bring.

“...a call comes in from LA to Wichita and they immediately send out a SWAT team?”

Yeah, I wondered about that too, but who knows how tech savy they are. That’ll change after this I bet.

Did you know: While working as a prop boy, John Wayne met Wyatt Earp; He later credited his walk, talk, and persona to his acquaintance with Earp

The perp is being held on a fugitive warrant.

The "perp" is the officer who killed the man. This guy is guilty of filing a false police report.
