I know someone who was a landlord in NYC. There are far more tenants than landlords in the voting rolls, and government there does not respect many limits, so all the laws there are very heavily slanted against landlords.

That’s right; one of the problems in the city is that individuals found it less and less profitable to operate rental properties, so the city is heavily involved with public housing - and it is a nightmare (with no evil landlord to blame but the city government itself).
A news story last year showed a lot of darker residents complaining that new city housing buildings were being filled with Orientals; apparently the gibsmedats were “entitled” to those new units...

That is what's mostly contributing to the homeless problem. You have these cities like NYC and Los Angeles that have strict zoning codes on what can be built because of the NIMBY people. Then landlords are required to install this, install that, give tenant's "rights," etc. Then there's Section 8 which give tenants a green light to destroy the property. And finally, there's rent control which forces landlords to rent to tenants at a loss.
So landlords don't keep up their properties or don't go in the business altogether.
The result? The lack of affordable housing that the very same liberals scream about but not realizing it's their policies that are creating it.
