“They’ll cut one cable and instantly lose 10 subs and hundreds of men...”

When dealing with Stalin, who everybody knew was a psycho killer, the West was extremely polite. Situations were defused because...nuclear weapons. You can’t engage in tit for tat with a nuclear power, especially if that power might, at any moment, collapse into chaos. If Putin cut a cable, which he won’t unless he thinks war is immanent, the US would do something proportional. It’s not as satisfying as hauling off and knocking him flat, but it’s not as likely to result in ten million casualties either.

Politics is a three-D chess game, not a rumble. For the first time in almost a decade I think we have a player on our side who is competent and has our best interests at heart. Putin sees this and won’t do anything stupid.

Kim Jung UN, now that’s a different matter. But again, one misstep on Trump’s part and mass casualties. The president who flubs that one will be out of office pronto.

This is backwards. Watch the Godfather if you want to understand what Trump is doing. Kim's a punk. One misstep and NK is molten glass.

I think my network password is too easy to guess

Use MAC filtering on the router and change the router admin password to something 20 characters long and mix of upper/lower/special characters/alphanumerics - and write it down (actually, your router will generate a password or two for the access password - you can use that as well - when you turn on WEP).

If its sourced in WAPO it is fake news until credible reporting emerges.

There's two kinds of people in the world. Those that can understand what the hell you just said and can do it, and those that can't and think you are speaking some form of lost language of the Incans.

In all seriousness, thank you for trying to help. I do appreciate the effort and the knowledge. But I was bustin' balls with my original post. I'm not really concerned about my wifi password.

Thanks for trying to help me though. You are a nice guy. Unlike my obnoxious ass.

You nailed it.

This is nothing new.

Russia and every submarine-equipped nation maps undersea cables.

This is just an effort to show how dangerous Russia is in an era of Trump.

5 years ago, they all laughed when Romney listed Russia as a major threat.

A week before the 2016 election, Obama said Russia could not hack our election. They want you to forget that.

Hypocrites. Never let them off their own hook.

It’s really important to make sure you’ve also changed the admin password for your router, and aren’t still using the password from the manufacturer.

Splicing into fiber is very difficult. I can’t imagine how next-to-impossible it would be 100s or even 1000s of feet underwater.

This has been going on since the Ruskies have had submarines and the first cable was laid. Some enterprising ‘jornalist’ thinks they have a scoop on this?

“Watch the Godfather if you want to understand what Trump is doing. Kim’s a punk. One misstep and NK is molten glass. “

The Godfather didn’t have an estimated 13,000 artillery pieces aimed at Seoul. Also, North Korea is bordered by China and Russia. Radioactive clouds raining death down on their territory would affect relations. (The Chinese are so hysterical that the collapse of the mountain over the NK nuclear test site might do just this that they have briefed every NK official they can get their hands on. Kim tacitly said he got the message by saying he’d make the next test over the ocean.)

When crazy guys have nukes it is no longer a rational, linear world where you can predict what the response will be for any given input. Trump obviously understands this and he is trying to convince the people around Kim to remove him. Kim understands this and is busy executing everyone around him who has had recent access to outside influence. If the outside world can keep up the pressure we will win. If Kim can convince somebody to supply food and fuel then he will win. So far, it’s up in the air who will win. There are lots of players willing to risk big to win big by supplying Kim. On the other hand, technology exists that can spot them smuggling. Only China or Russia, with government approval, could supply enough to keep the Kim regime going. China agreed to play along and appears to be playing along, but estimates are they have bought and paid for exports equivalent to a year in advance, so Kim already has the money.

Nothing any side does is definitive or 100% effective. It’s a complicated game with lots of players, each interested only in their own interests.

I do have confidence Trump can play to win.

"Under sea ? Not possible"

Why not? If it's copper conductors, induction sensors. Not all undersea cables are optical fiber. Look up "Ivy Bells". That was 40 years ago.

What are the chances that the FSB can do the same, particularly with commercial systems?

There have been many credible reports of Putinist Russia doing similar unprofessional stunts with aircraft and ships. Given that, I find the report very credible.
