Karl Rove: 'Bad idea' for Trump to hold a lot of rallies in 2018
The Hill ^ | Dec 22, 2017 | Max Greenwood

Republican strategist Karl Rove said Friday that President Trump would be wise to spend 2018 focusing on his agenda, rather than campaigning leading up to the midterms.

In an interview on Fox News, Rove said that Trump has enjoyed a boost in his popularity in recent days because of his focus on tax reform. By putting an emphasis on his policy agenda, Rove argued, Trump could turn around his low approval ratings.

"He's not very popular and the way to become more popular is to become less political and more involved in his agenda," said Rove, a former senior aide to President George W. Bush.

Trump is fresh off the first major legislative victory of his presidency after congressional Republicans passed a sweeping rewrite of the nation's tax code this week. The president signed that measure into law on Friday.

For most of his first year in office, Trump has suffered dwindling approval ratings, which Rove attributed to the president's off-the-cuff attacks against critics and political opponents as well as his bombastic, combative rhetoric.

Trump has relished campaign-style rallies, even after taking office this year. He often uses the events to tout his victory in the 2016 election and boasting about his Electoral College win.

The Washington Post reported that Trump met earlier this week with his former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, the former head of the Republican National Committee, to discuss the 2018 midterms.

"The president ought to spend 2018 focusing on his job as president and advancing an agenda that makes a difference in the lives of ordinary Americans, and he should downplay politics," Rove said on Fox.

Does anybody remember when Karl was called the "Magnificent Bastard" here on FR? How times have changed.

I disagree. Virginia and Alabama prove that he needs to campaign for people.

2005: "Rove, you magnificent bastard!"

2017: "Rove...you bastard."

My recommendation is that President Trump do the opposite of what Rove recommends.

There has never been a clearer signal that Trump should hold more rallies next year. Karl Rove does not wish the president well, and Trump doesn’t need Rove’s advice.

You are exactly right... he needs to get his people into positions to run and get elected instead of sitting back and letting the deep state / rinos / dems let pro Trump Tea Party types die on the vine so they can maintain control.

Correct me if I’m wrong, Mr. Rove
but I don’t think The Donald cares what you,
faithful mascot of the Globalists have to say.

Didn’t you advise W not to respond to the torrents of lies and media disrespect back then?
How did all that turning the other cheek’ stuff work for you?

When will a legitimate poll be conducted re Trump’s popularity? This reminds me so much of the polls before the election that showed Clinton so far ahead that even her dust could not be seen. Apparently Rove buys the current polls.

Yeah, if I were Rove, I wouldn’t want Trump to campaign for real conservatives, either; Rove’s Rinos will sink. But how many bet most Rinos and NeverTrumpers will suddenly start sidling up to Trump and want his support at primary time?

I don't think President Trump is much worried about his ratings. He's too busy Making America Great Again.

Screw Rove.

Karl is establishment.

If Dems take the House, that’s good for the establishment.

If Trump campaigns for those now in the House (and Senate) who like him now that he’s helped get a tax plan they’ve all (basically) wanted.... and they win reelection...

Then Karl’s establishment is diminished - as is his prospects for jobs with the swamp people.
...

Trump should put this on a white board :-)

Ahhh yes, Karl Rove.

The embodiment of everything that was wrong about the George W. Bush misadministration.

GWB enabled Obama. He set precedent and paved the way for all the damage that Obama inflicted for eight years.

America is finally recovering. And has begun to enjoy a prosperity that hasn't been known since at least Reagan and possibly not in any living memory.

And Rove wants a retreat from that?

He, and everyone and everything he represents, is an enemy of this republic.

Yes. One rally in Alabama would have put Moore over the top.
