Wyoming Secretary of State Ed Murray Denies Accusation of Sexual Assault
KGWN ^ | Dec 14, 2017 | Jeremy Downing

Posted on 12/14/2017 5:39:52 PM PST by nickcarraway

Wyoming Secretary of State Ed Murray is denying claims he sexual assaulted a former co-worker.

In a Facebook post, Tatiana Maxwell alleges the incident happened 35 years ago when she and Murray worked together at a Cheyenne law firm.

She says she “told close friends about the incident at the time and my then husband some years later.” Maxwell goes on to say “As this issue of sexual harassment and assault has grown, my daughters have asked about my experience. As I described it, they asked what I did about it and the answer is, nothing. I did not know what to do and I don’t believe there was really any option available that would have properly addressed the problem. But it is a different time and they have encouraged me to speak up. I am gratified to know that they have a different understanding of things and know what to do if something like this would happen to one of them.”

In her Facebook post, Maxwell claims she had gotten a summer job out of high school. She says her co-worker, Murray, invited her to hang out in the receptionist’s area of the law office where they worked. She says Murray told her he was attracted to her and “started putting his hands on me and tried to kiss me.” Her post continues with graphic details on how he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Maxwell claims Murray apologized and says she did not tell anyone because she thought it might get her fired. She also says Murray married one of her classmates, so they still saw each other at reunions, at which point he continued to apologize.

CBS Newschannel 5 spoke with Murray’s spokesperson Will Dineen on Wednesday who says he could not speak on the Secretary’s behalf. On Thursday morning, a statement was sent to KGWN in which Sec. Murray denied the allegation saying, “This baseless claim about an encounter from thirty-five years ago is unequivocally false. There is no basis to this falsehood whatsoever and it is deeply hurtful to me and to my family, as well as to everyone I serve.”

Sec. Murray says he “struggles to understand what would motivate someone to make this kind of accusation.”

You can read the entire statement below:

Ed Murray’s Statement In Response to Ms. Maxwell’s Claim December 14, 2017

I was shocked and appalled to read Ms. Maxwell’s statement. This baseless claim about an encounter from thirty-five years ago is unequivocally false. There is no basis to this falsehood whatsoever and it is deeply hurtful to me and to my family, as well as to everyone I serve.

I struggle to understand what would motivate someone to make this kind of accusation. But considering that this statement was made in the context of the #metoo movement, I want to take this moment to acknowledge the overall importance of this conversation, as well as to reaffirm my commitment to being an ally for women. As a husband of thirty-one years and the father of four incredible daughters, I take my role as an advocate for women with utmost importance. While I am deeply disturbed by this false allegation, I choose to allow this to serve as a reminder of how important it is to be an advocate for the courageous women and men who have spoken out against a very serious problem in our country. Sexual harassment is real and has no place in our society.

There is another Ed Murray who was a politician in Washington state (Democrat) who resigned in September as Mayor of Seattle due to alleged sexual misconduct....wondering if the accuser is confused as to which Ed Murray?

okay she was 18 and he was 24.

Why did she wait 35 years?? Clearly he has been a power player for awhile.

Screw this women. I don’t believe her, and IF someone kissed her or grabbed a boob with the thought of getting some action and the she stops him and the man stops and doesn’t force her any further this is NOT sexual harassment OR assault.
It’s called making a move.

These phony women are trying to equate serious sexual assault and sexual harassment with a ONE TIME incident where a man makes a move, they deny the man, and it’s over. Anyone think this is crazy???

You are so right! 30-40 years after the alledged incident? Give me a break,There isn’t a red blooded normal American man who isn’t quaking in his own shit about something coming up out the past...in the current climate. Including me. My attitude is hit it head on. If true.,own it and say so what. If not true then never cave.

Some women will feel free to throw any charge, however unprovable, and hope that something sticks.
In most cases, the Statute of Limitations should be adhered to. Distant memory can greatly distort historical fact, especially when one version of the ‘memory’ will provide you with a payoff of several thousand dollars. Just in time for retirement!

I believe none of them anymore, and I'm a woman

I'm with you. We're in a situation now where gaggles of women are getting together and sharing experiences from their pasts. I'd wager that a lot of it from those who aren't lying are altered memories caused by the swirl of stories being generated. I'll also submit that any woman who went along with things for an advancement or a career opportunity is not a victim. There's a better term to describe women who exchange sexual favors for payment of any kind.

Meanwhile, what are we not discussing? We're not discussing what's going on today. There are women living as sex slaves, including young girls. There are women being forced into abortions by a society that teaches them that the slaughter of pre-separation infants is okay. And, oh yeah, what about the women who didn't get that advancement or that career opportunity because she didn't play along.....that's the victim.

Grrrr.....I'm okay with accusations within the statute of limitations, made in private, innocent until proven guilty. Some of the first cases (not Roy Moore) might well be legit. But this is crazy. What normal man would ever run for political office again if this feeding frenzy doesn't end?

I find a few credible but agree with you, don't think people should be tried and destroyed in the court of public opinion especially over something that allegedly happened so long ago and no evidence.

Even Al Franken, surely not on our side, maybe bad judgment, but she did have a flak jacket on so I'm sure he got a good feel. I can see where she might be humiliated not knowing it was taken. The deep kiss we have to take her word for it. And that I did find more credible than a lot of others.

That Kentucky state representative shot himself over accusations by a woman when she was 17 was molested by him which he denied. Now his widow is running for his seat.

I liked that Dem congresswoman's comment about revealing dress to work and cleavage down to the floor. I agree with the person reporting it that men should learn to control themselves over stuff like that. The bottom line is women dress like that on purpose, to look sexy, whether at work or social.

Its become a status symbol for these whack jobs to claim to have been sexually harassed. Probably at their age and looks now they would go down like a ...I don’t know what but fast.

It’s getting to be way too much rehashing of past history that most people could probably recall somewhat similar examples back in the 70s or 80s, and I think it’s time to start a “rape only or we don’t care” movement.

If there was an actual forcible rape, then perhaps it should be brought to light after all this time, although if there’s no evidence, what’s to stop some vindictive politicized females from inventing a story? If it was just inappropriate touching during young adult or teenage years, then let’s agree that this was so pervasive as to be almost a background noise of those times, if it has now become absolutely verboten then that’s for today’s young people to hassle out, in my youth I was not really that aware that such behavior was entirely wrong and I think that goes for most people who are now in their 60s or 70s.

So I would say let’s raise the bar and ignore this sort of rehashing especially if it’s 20 or more years into the past when there is little chance of useful third party testimony being available.

Yep, and also that it’s a convenient way to get revenge against someone whose life has turned out better than you wished, or you just decide you don’t like much after 30 or 40 years.
