Media Hubris and the Fall of the Center
American Thinker ^ | Dec 14, 2017 | Taylor Lewis

Mitch Daniels, the former governor of Indiana, went from estimable presidential candidate to nondescript university president in the political timeframe of a nanosecond. Back in 2011, Daniels was on many a short list of potential Republican presidential candidates. A stalwart fiscal hawk, a tempered social conservative, former Reagan advisor, a cost-cutting budget wonk, and a seasoned politician, the White House nod might have been his, had he picked the path.

But, alas, as Caesar opined to Brutus, he eschewed the stars and opted not to run. The reason was good: Daniels’s wife, Cheri, left him for a doctor in 1994. They later patched things up, but a dredging up of the past is a prerequisite of presidential campaigns, and Daniels, honorable man he is, chose family over calling.

We live with our choices, and Daniels lived with his. Today, he heads Purdue University. And while he’s out of public office, he still sounds off on political issues in the pages of The Washington Post.

His latest offering, just in time for Advent season, hits on the greatest trouble of our time. As the new year approaches, the country is mired in epistemological crisis. Political polarization is at its highest point since the Civil War. Ideologically purity tears at the middle that once formed our national consensus. There’s a sense that one’s political party is now his tribe, and elections are bloody brawls like the kind between the Dead Rabbits and the Natives in Scorsese’s Gangs of New York.

Daniels pinpoints the source of our intransigence: an inability to admit fault. In “Is Anyone Ever Wrong Anymore?” the man once dubbed “The Blade” laments the loss of the biblical virtue called humility. A combination of forces has made us intellectually comfortable, reassured in our convictions.

Every time the media fails it elevates Trump. So let them keep failing.

If I could do flash games, I’d make a “Clinton beef side launcher” where you toss the comatose undead into vehicles or into dumpsters, etc.

And why would it be relevant to make that game?
To needle the media.

My memory of Daniels is that he revealed himself to be a squish of sorts, and that turned off a lot people.

The author is right. My sister is a very liberal
Dem and she will not even talk to me on Twitter, because I post supportive things to our president.

We couldn’t be more different. She had an abortion while I would never in a million years ... which is why my first boyfriend wouldn’t have s** with me; he just wanted the convenience. No thanks.

It is sad how divided this country has become. After President Trump was elected, I said to my husband, well Thanksgiving should be extra interesting this year...

Good points about liberals. And it doesn’t seem to hold for most conservatives. We will discuss this kind of stuff, and relish the opportunity to discuss it. Most liberals immediately launch into ad hominum attacks.

But it is just as solid an indicator in religious circles. A Muslim coworker and I stated discussing Jesus and His claims, a fairly religious conversation, which neither of us seemed to have much problem with. The muslim coworker was denying the claims and I was discussing historical evidence for same. But when I brought up Mohammed’s different claims, the conversation took a very black turn and he stood up, arguing that he would not stand for any denigration of the Prophet, and then stomped out.

I sometimes wonder if the angry disagreement mentality of Muslims and Liberals stems less from tribalism, then from the internal recognition of the weakness of their position and their arguments.

The country was always this divided. The only difference is that the right is actually fighting back now. The bullies in the left, who are used to getting their way, call that aggression.

Politics is war without bullets. Moderation sucks. We start fighting politically ares start actually shooting each other. I am good either way.

It is a very thoughtful article.

But I wanted to comment on your screen name. :) Years ago, I got into an accident and wrecked our car, so we had to rent some low-budget car, which happened to be blue.

So every time we would get in the car, I would sing, “Off we go, into our bright blue tin can” LOL

>>In each of these incidents, the respective news organizations issued retractions, but only after another party pointed out the mistake. Had the claims gone unquestioned, they’d be treated as facts today.

Actually, for many, they ARE still facts. Lefties who never saw the retractions still treat them as such, and there are many thus.

No, the reason ISN'T because we can't admit when we are wrong. . .the reason is that one side believes we are endowed by the CREATOR with inalienable rights while the other side rejects that notion believing that absolute power is to be strictly in the hands of the elites, our betters, and that power is to be taken BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

I THANK GOD, that the nation is so divided. It is GOD that has divided the nation, so that what is GOOD and what is EVIL can be clearly delineated. It is so that WE THE PEOPLE can make the choice. . GOD or NO GOD. . .GOOD or EVIL. . .and, if we, as a nation, repent of our sin, and DESTROY the evil. . God will hear our pray and heal the nation. . THAT is the ONLY way we shall come together again. . .otherwise, a "house divided" will not stand and we shall fall as a nation.

Well said. It is the decision that has been obfuscated by the media for 50 years, as they have lead us closer and closer to totalitarianism.

The decision needs to be out in the open.

Then they lose.

What is the “reasonable,” “moderate” position between slaughtering babies and not slaughtering babies, or having borders and having no borders?

When violence does break out, the blame will belong to the baby-killers who want to eliminate countries.

Weak position or not , leftists actually control America.

I argue that the leftists have carried into the heart of government a technique used in national churches, the Sierra Club, the Audubon society, and all the unions. The boards are infiltrated and then taken over and then the organization is used to accomplish political ends while leaving the rank and file to belong but not have a voice.

The seditious technique is so pervasive that the left essentially controls most everything.

The solution is to go into each corrupted organization including the FBI and DOJ and clean house by killing off thousands of the leftist wing corrupters. Absent such drastic and thorough action there will be no real change. America needs 1792.

When their lawyers squeal, they must be silenced.

Meanwhile conservatives on the floor center of the arena just before being eaten by the lions go on and on about the sanctity off the law
