What could possibly be the reason to make sure that known hacking of the voter rolls didn’t result in hacking of the vote tabulation? Why would anybody EVER want to destroy the evidence that would show whether a known hacking was actually effective in overturning the will of the people?
It is because the ballot images are timestamped. Alabama law does not authorize the retention of that information for good reason, to protect the anonymity of the ballot. It is already a matter of public record who voted and where they voted. Being able to attach a specific time to a specific ballot significantly erodes the anonymity of the voter. To demonstrate this, recall the last time you voted.
