New body-cam video shows a police officer killing an unarmed man

A newly-released video shows an Arizona police officer shooting and killing an unarmed man in January 2016 after the man, who was crying and begging for his life, made a mistake in complying with his orders.

The body camera footage was released on Friday by the judge presiding over Officer Philip Brailsford's trial after Brailsford was acquitted on Thursday for the killing.

The victim, 26-year-old pest control worker Daniel Shaver, was staying in the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Mesa, Arizona while on a business trip when police received a call that someone was pointing a gun out of the window of the hotel, Newsweek reported. While Shaver had reportedly been showing off a pellet gun to two guests that night, according to witnesses, he was unarmed when the police confronted him in the hallway of the hotel.

In the video, Brailsford is seen standing by as another officer, Sgt. Charles Langley, commanded Shaver to get on the floor and crawl towards him, all while berating him and intimidating him with death threats. Shaver appeared to be complying with his orders, and can be heard sobbing as he crawls towards Brailsford and Langley. But after Shaver reached back toward his pant leg, Brailsford shot him five times with his AR-15, believing he was reaching for a gun.

"Please don't shoot me," Shaver begged Brailsford, moments before his death.

After being charged with second-degree murder in May 2016, Brailsford was acquitted after less than six hours of deliberation by a jury, Vice News reported.

During the trial, Brailsford maintained that he did nothing wrong.

"If this situation happened exactly as it did that time, I would have done the same thing," Brailsford stated in court.

While not making a judgement on the shooting....cops are in an area they already secured....the room they were going to after detaining the two in hallway was not yet cleared.

You bring people to your “secured” location and do jot step into an unsecured (area in front of the motel room door) until the folks in hallway have been secured.

If you have seen police officers doing a felony stop on stolen car it is done same way...clear commands and call them to you.

The officer gave clear commmands....the kid was meltinh under the preasure and his intoxication (IMHO) and the cop did not modulate his tone which “MAY” have allowed the drunk and overwhelmed young man to relax a bit and successfully follow the commands.

True.

I believe the city of Mesa is going to get hit with a huge settlement. They need to settle soon and move on. A civil trial and verdict could blow a whole in their budget ghat will take a decade to pay off.

As a general thing, I don’t mind when that happens, and I wasn’t necessarily criticizing you.

My daughter asked me about bail. That got me started on Amendment VI: “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial,” and Amendment VIII: “Excessive bail shall not be required...”

Those constitutional provisions are violated hundreds or thousands of times every day. People are asked for excessive bail, cannot pay it, and spend years in jail waiting for trial, innocent or not.

Another national shame is that we don’t protect prisoners from each other. It’s not unusual for prisoners to be killed, maimed, or infected with AIDS while confined.

Meanwhile, the forces of evil keep our attention focused on the efforts of police officers to stay alive while engaged in close-quarters combat with soulless, remorseless savages.

What’s wrong with that picture?

I understand the danger that cops have to go through, and their caution. But I think all his barking various orders which the (intocated?) man was expected to keep track of went too far. I don’t know if I would have been able to keep all that straight even sober. I should also be able to walk down a hallway without my life suddenly hanging by a thread.

“First of all I did not see this posted anywhere on Freerepublic.”

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3611989/posts

But that’s not my point. I’m not criticizing the repeat posting here so much as I am concerned with the constant drumbeat of “bad cop” propaganda.

“Second, your argument does not make any sense. If it was a good shooting like you imply why are you worried about the public knowing our officers are acting courageously to defend the public?”

What? Where did I say I was worried about the public knowing?

“It sounds like you are concerned that this is a bad shooting and you do not want the public to know about it.”

Are you hallucinating? I never said I didn’t want the public to know.

“Cops do heroic work and a few bad apples need to be disciplined.”

Yes.

“The Mesa PD thought this officer was a bad apple for a couple of reasons and fired him.”

Which bears on the verdict in this shooting exactly how?

“The public needs to know these things.”

If the left is to create the “all cops are bad” narrative, then certainly, this should be shoved in everyone’s face constantly and to the exclusion of all else.

Were you on that jury?

Do you need instructions to put on your pants?

“Were you on that jury?”

I presume you’re trying to say something uncomplimentary. However, your meaning is lost. Write more clearly.

He quickly pulled up his pants. He made the mistake of assuming the people on the other side of that gun were human and would not kill him

I am Pro-police, but this was murder. If that boy was my son, I would be seeking an eye for an eye. No amount of money in the world would satisfy my lust for vengeance. My heart breaks for this boy’s family.

I don’t know that background of what happened, but I don’t think anything justifies pumping four shots into that guy who was only having a problem following directions.

This image is the perfect metaphor. The government is behind the camera. Crawl on your knees and don’t even think about pulling up your pants!

Anyone who is intoxicated would do poorly playing Simon says and Simon didn’t tell him to do that. Very bad procedure here in securing this person quickly. It could happen to anybody.

The cop did make a flat out statement “We our going to shoot you. Do you understand that”? He didn’t put any “if’s” or “or” in front of that. A logical person might even be think about self defense at that point. Just saying...

I’m Canadian and I envy the Second Amedment. Government is the same everywhere. Self defence is the only way.
