The white ex-South Carolina cop who shot an unarmed black man in the back as a passerby videotaped the stunning death received a 20-year federal prison term Thursday.
Former North Charleston officer Michael Slager was sentenced by U.S. District Judge David Norton, who earlier ruled the cops shooting of Walter Scott during a traffic stop was second-degree murder.
This is a tragedy that shouldnt have happened, said Norton, who could have thrown the disgraced law enforcer behind bars for 24 years.
Slager, 36, was also declared guilty of obstruction of justice for the bogus version of the April 2015 shooting that he gave to state police investigators.

Go look at the video?
How about the video of the life and death fight they had before Scott was shot? Or the video of the cop getting tazed by Scott?
Oh that’s right. There is no video of that. So lets just judge the entire incident based on some 10 seconds of video.
Again, as I’ve said repeatedly - Slager deserved to be tried and convicted. But this sentence is excessive.
You have hit the crux of the problem!
This is the reason why Slager was given such a sentence. He lied from the get go.

Well, there’s that, and the racial tensions stirred up by Obama that actually got other cops executed.
I agree with your post. There was a struggle on the ground that wasn’t on the video. Slager also knew he wouldn’t be getting any backup due to a shortage of cops on patrol.
Eventually Slager gave up his fight for freedom, probably due to a bit of Stockholm syndrome.
GOOD! He belongs in jail.
BS. It was as close to murder as you can get without it being murder 1.

I agree. Should have been the death penalty but 20 years works if he doesn’t get out early.
Conjecture on your part. You don't know anything about his level of excitation.
He was definitely guilty of murder. I don’t think 20 years was that bad, and the other thing, of course, is that in SC at this time, his action was quite inflammatory. Fortunately it came before the church shooting, but even then, a lot of black ministers kept the peace by stating that justice would be done.
And it was. Scott was running away, was a low-level nobody, not a saint but not a big baddie, and the cop just got mad and shot him. Not something anybody wants to encourage.

You watch. It'll be ruled unfortunate, but justified. They usually are.
There was no ‘life or death’ fight. Scott was running, from the video some 20’ away from Slager when Slager aimed and shot. No threat to Slager. Thus murder, not self-defense or justified shooting.
Completely different situations! Michael Brown attacked Darren Wilson and then charged at him a minute later. Wilson defended himself.
This officer shot the guy in the back as he ran away. Twenty years is a pretty light sentence for what he did.
