Reform Jewish Movement: Concerned About White House Jerusalem Announcement
Union for Reform Judaism ^ | 5 Dec 2017 | Anon

Posted on 12/06/2017 4:00:10 PM PST by Rummyfan

The statement below is issued by Union for Reform Judaism President Rabbi Rick Jacobs on behalf of the organizations of the Reform Jewish Movement, the largest movement in Jewish life:

President Trump’s ill-timed, but expected, announcement affirms what the Reform Jewish Movement has long held: that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Yet while we share the President’s belief that the U.S. Embassy should, at the right time, be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, we cannot support his decision to begin preparing that move now, absent a comprehensive plan for a peace process. Additionally, any relocation of the American Embassy to West Jerusalem should be conceived and executed in the broader context reflecting Jerusalem’s status as a city holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims alike.

There will never be a right time, just as there will never be a comprehensive peace.

From the devolved simian palestinian side, there will only be a peace process when all jews are dead. So they can rage over a few square miles for all time for all I care. They only care about Jerusalem because Jews live there, that is the only reason so fuqum, they can and will erupt into violence at the drop of a hat, so so what if this is the reason, there will be violence anyway

the socalled reformed jewish movement is dying ....
spiritually as well as physically dying out

all this is .. is a few of the old ‘leaders’ spouting off...
as a way of criticizing DJt, who they don’t care for....

what is happening is that the ‘reform’ jews are dying out and not reproducing.............any kids are leaving the fold mostly, too..................
while more traditional Jews are still faithful and managing to make great strides, progress..... with growing congregations in most cities, too.

it is parallel to what’s happening in Christendom, where most of the left wing liberal progressive post-christian churches are dying out......while there is considerable growth in many of the more traditional or conservative denominations

They’re siding with the Pope. Must be attuned to the same higher power.

JINOS.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there were violence targeted at the embassy. That said, the notion of it affecting the mythical peace process is silly.

The Palis want blood and bribes. The embassy is a sideshow.

There never was or ever has been a peace process in the ME. They attacked, Jews won, let’s eat.

They can’t stand the notion that by Trump doing something different he may achieve a different result.

The NeoCons have to oppose anything Trump does, no matter what it is.

It is a sideshow. More importantly it’s a well aimed kick to the Gazan despots’ balls. But wait! There’s more said the RONCO guy on TV. Same with Trump.

Oh boy are Hanukkah celebrations gonna be interesting for us Deplorables that are going to hang w/ our Reform friends ;-). Well their is at least one Jewish Deplorable that will stand with me!

Seriously, with all due respect to the Rabbi, when will be the right time? Clinton gave that little twerp Yassar Arafat 90+% of what he wanted and he walked away from the deal. Screw-um. This negotiates from a position of strength not continue this faculty lounge theoretical dialog for another 50 freakin' years.

Get-er-Freakin' done. Everyone thought I was crazy here when I said he was going for the big enchilada a peace deal. I am not so crazy now.

Isn't it obvious the Trump mantra is promise big and get it done? Kind of like a skyscraper?

Let me tell them why they are wrong. This conflict has been going on for generations - since WW2 basically. Nothing has worked.

Clinton and a bunch of diplomats including Europeans put together the Oslo accords as a framework to negotiate the old ‘land for peace’ deal based on UN Resolution 242. It was 1991 when they started to draft Oslo and 1993 when they signed it - 25 years ago basically. And it has not worked. It does not work for a lot of reasons but one of the main reasons is that there are these giant issues hanging, like the status of Jerusalem, the settlements, the division of land etc. Though it is my belief the majority of the failure lies with the Palestinians, to be fair in this analysis (and it is true) you could say that both sides use these issues to scapegoat their way out of serious negotiations.

So Trump is doing something unique here. He recognizes that the old framework doesn’t work. So he is taking the power out of these major “final status” issues. The Palestinians would never agree to cede Jerusalem unless forced. The Israelis would never agree to withdraw from all settlements unless forced (and I am not saying Trump wil try to force them, just making the point).

So Trump’s first move here is controversial to the diplomats who invested their lives in the process we have known because this kind of thing was supposed to be the last issue decided. And it is a thumb in the eye of the UN too for good measure. But Trump realizes if we keep doing it the way we have been it will never get done. So the US is going to make its position on these issues known and both sides will have to deal with it. This move takes the power away from the issue and they can no longer scapegoat it to avoid making important decisions... and that allows them to focus on the practical matters. Particularly, the Palestinians need to decide what is most important to them, continued conflict or a peaceful, prosperous state for their people?

There is a thread running about the new Saudi plan that I wrote on that has a lot of other exciting thoughts about where this is all going. It includes the rumored plan of building a Palestinian state using some of the West Bank, all of Gaza and about 2000 sq miles of land in the Sinai, allowing Israel to keep strategic depth and defensible borders and the Palestinians a lot of room to resettle refugees and build their own country. This is the kind ingenuity the region needs - because the needs of today cannot be held hostage by these old conflicts that make no sense. Everyone must deal in reality and in the end all of the people of the Mid East will benefit greatly by making peace and opening trade with Israel.

The Reform Movement has moved further and further away from core Jewish values. The Reform synagogue I went to growing up and was bar mitzvah'ed at would today probably be considered a Conservative synagogue. I've stopped going because the services feel empty and the members are mostly leftists who keep complaining about imagined stereotypes of 50 years ago.

President Trump made the right decision. The Arab countries are ready. They see the bigger threat of Iran. Donald Trump is a strong leader and so is Benjamin Netanyahu. The Arab countries will make a form of peace with Israel because they need Israel and the US to protect them from Iran. So, Thank You Iran!! ;-) -- Now that's making lemonade from lemons!

More to the point... this group says they support the idea of Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel. So why are they quibbling over what really is just politics? Not just politics, but the politics of their ideological opponents!

When you get what you want, you say thank you and stop arguing. If they are not prepared to accept it now, then when (to paraphrase Rabbi Hillel). If they are not for themselves, then who will be (ibid)? What do they think will be gained by waiting? They want to keep talking until the Palestinians agree with their logic? So much nonsense in these leftist groups its baffling.
