The Atlantic: Trump's Food Choices Grow More Disconcerting
The Atlantic ^ | 12/02/17 | James Hamblin

Posted on 12/03/2017 10:37:42 AM PST by Simon Green

A new memoir implicates the Filet-O-Fish in a 2,400-calorie dinner.

“Trump’s appetite seems to know no bounds when it comes to McDonald’s, with a dinner order consisting of two Big Macs, two Fillet-O-Fish, and a chocolate malted.”

This 2,400-calorie meal is among the details in a forthcoming book by Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and aid David Bossie, as described in a preview by The Washington Post.

A dinner of that size would offer caloric energy for a full day. The 3,400 milligrams of sodium more than doubles the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 1,500 milligrams per day. The meal provides almost no fiber—and also offers more white bread than anyone would do well to eat in a week. This is all ominous for the president’s cardiovascular system.

So is the lack of variety. The book’s authors, who traveled with Trump early in his presidency, write: “On Trump Force One there were four major food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza, and Diet Coke.”

Keeping the Coke sugar-free is an interesting line to draw—especially as a man who once said, “I have never seen a thin person drink Diet Coke.”

The food enters the President not only in abundance, but with haste. Ivanka Trump said in a 2015 interview with Barbara Walters, “I wish he would eat healthier and maybe slow down. Sometimes I tell him, like, ‘Oh, you have to, you know, slow down.’ But it’s the only speed he knows ...”

All of this could be taken as simple evidence of Trump’s cultural vacuousness. He should know other speeds; he has dined with other people. He should enjoy a wide array of foods; he has been afforded the opportunity to have anything he wants.

Jake: Got any fried chicken?

Mrs. Murphy: Best damn chicken in the state.

Jake: Bring me four fried chickens and a Coke.

Mrs. Murphy: You want chicken wings or chicken legs?

Jake: Four fried chickens and a Coke.

Elwood: And some dry white toast please.

Mrs. Murphy: Y’all want anything to drink with that?

Elwood: No ma’am.

Jake: A Coke.

Mrs. Murphy: Be up in a minute

President Jefferson was enamored by macaroni and cheese, which he discovered on a trip to France. Jefferson is actually credited with increasing macaroni’s popularity in the United States after he served it at a State dinner in 1802.

Everyone has heard of apple pie, but did you know you could make it with a pork filling? President Coolidge did, and he loved it.

During FDR’s administration, his favorite go-to snack was really gooey grilled cheese.

President Nixon loved the odd combination of cottage cheese and ketchup.

GHW Bush loved pork rinds with Tabasco so much that pork rind sales actually increased 11 percent during his presidency.

In an interview with Jerry Seinfeld, Obama said nachos are “one of those where I have to have it taken away. I’ll have guacamole coming out of my eyeballs.”

One learns the best stuff at FreeRepublic!

I too have had leg cramps at night. I was once told it was caused by a lack of calcium. Now I shall have to also try both salt and mustard. It’s worth trying anything to prevent those awful leg seizures! Yowch what pain!

I suspect Trump is at heart a steak and potatoes man. McDonalds is a diversion and public relations opportunity. The average Trump voter doesn’t care for the exotic foods, and in the blue collar and farm towns, there is little access to Whole Foods and the like. They resent the soy boys and latte girls who disdain them in turn.

“1) I think it instructive to observe the machinations of the other side.”

You’re pretty new to FR. Trust me, we’re well aware of the machinations of the other side.

Magnesium. You want the powered kind that you can take in water.

It will taste slightly sweet if you need it. An fourth of a teaspoon in a cup of water when the cramps start. They will be gone in about ten minutes.

I think the Lincoln anecdote was when people complained about Grant’s drinking Lincoln told them to find out what he drinks and send it to all his generals.

You’d think the Left would be sending him coupons for free Big Macs and supersized soggy fries with lots of salt.

Bizarro world or what?

Actually I would like him to eat healthier too. I want him around a full 8 years and many years after that so he can enjoy watching the changes he brought about in America.
