When Hurricane Irma hit Florida in September, it claimed the lives of 134 people and laid waste to $65 billion worth of property. But for Republicans here, it was another hurricane that could wreck their chances of future electoral success.
Hurricane Maria struck the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico two weeks after Irma, wiping out much of the islands drinking water and power grid, and prompting thousands of Puerto Ricans to flee the island. More than 140,000 have landed in Florida so far, and the vast majority are expected to remain in the Sunshine State.
The influx of Puerto Ricans to Florida has many Florida politicos wondering whether the newcomers could help deliver the state to Democrats for years to come.
Evaluations of Republicans responses to the natural disaster have been mixed. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has received praise for setting up relief centers, waiving public school enrollment rules and giving Puerto Rican college students in-state tuition rates, among other welcoming gestures. Term limits prevent Scott from seeking re-election as governor, but he is widely expected to run for U.S. Senate next year.
President Trumps response, in contrast, has been criticized as combative and tone-deaf. At one point he tweeted in response to criticism of federal recovery efforts that Puerto Ricans want everything done for them.
Puerto Rico experts and community leaders I spoke with used words such as disheartened, very disappointed, and absolutely furious to describe Puerto Ricans reaction to Trumps handling of the crisis.

It could happen. As a Floridian, it is cringe-worthy to me.
Not if we get a super majority in both houses and pass a law stripping citizenship of those not born in the US, and give the island back to Spain as a gesture of good will. /s
“Does Influx of Puerto Ricans from Hurricane Affect Trump’s Re-election in Florida?”
++++++++++++++++
Oh no!
Another Coincidence!
;)

The Media has been harping for weeks now about how Puerto Ricans are moving up and no one hardly reacts to this. Almost all that are coming are those who can afford to while the voting base that they’re hoping, praying, dancing & prancing for will remain in San Juan with their Dear talking Mayor.
I congratulate you Trump for ignoring her baiting in the Press which started up again yesterday in the midst of the Democrat scandals.
“Well, this is what happens when Dems politicize a natural disaster. “
If Hispanics voted Republican the Democrats would have built a
wall already.
Yes but we will make it up elsewhere Minn, N.H, Colorado and Nevada come to mind
A paranoid person would think that’s why the local PR politicians are going out of their way to slow down recovery of the electric grid there.
they are getting “incentives” to drive as many as possible to the mainland.
I’m not too concerned. The people that are moving up are those that have given up on Puerto Rico. They are the wealthy mostly Republican types I’m willing to bet.
2020 will such a Trump-slide all such talk will soon be relegated to the dust bin of history.
I would guess that FL could be a problem with these new residents. Hopefully, they won’t get citizenship and won’t vote.
In the past I have been quite successful at times in getting the Puerto Rican vote.
The governor of Puerto Rico prior to the current governor was a Tea Party/Club For Growth Republican.
We should not write off the Puerto Rican vote, just as we should not write off the vote of anyone else. Most Puerto Ricans want to work, the majority that we can get to vote for us. If Trump and local Conservatives, Republicans push a pro-jobs, pro-opportunity theme, we can get their vote.
Puerto Ricans are very patriotic and join the military in higher percentages than the rest of us. Most of them are very anti-Castro. Most of them are very conservative Catholic or Evangelical/Pentecostal. We can get their vote.
But getting their vote will mean welcoming them. Including them. Framing jobs and patriotism without being condescending.
I hope so. The Cubans, I trust. I don’t know any Puerto Ricans.
The Democrats on the island are poor they can’t afford to travel much less move unless they have relatives here.
Another idiot story about PRs......Florida will be more RED....
>.If Hispanics voted Republican the Democrats would have built a wall already
Brilliant insight!
The Media has been reporting this with glee but they haven’t bothered looking into who’s who that’s moving. They act as if all Puerto Ricans are Democrats and that they’re all poor. The fact that the San Juan Mayor boasted yesterday about having Puerto Ricans move to Republican districts to vote them out goes to show you how politicized their minds are.
Just stamping out vote fraud in Broward County alone more than counters the Democrat portion of the Puerto Ricans.
I completely agree!
“...Hopefully, they wont get citizenship...”
