This 10% decline seems to be consistent this season.

If ratings are down 10% for the year, the NFL could be losing some serious revenue.

I’ve heard that while the NFL is paid up front for rights to air the games, that there are provision in the contracts that they need to achieve a certain minimum level of ratings otherwise there are financial consequences.

So these ratings being down will eventually cause money to come out of the pockets of NFL owners.

Agree. The next round of TV contracts will have some protections for the broadcasters. Hard ball style you fall below X percent you owe us money ......

I have read that the cost of ads is tied to viewership numbers, if the number dips below the expected/projected number the amount the ad costs is decreased.

As far as I can tell the NFL is financed by corporation ads at the top and fans/taxpayers at the bottom. Fans have an impact, but it takes a while for the fans sitting out to cost them enough to make a difference. They all thought and some still do think that the boycotts are temporary to make a point. That is not what I am seeing though. I am seeing people that are actually done with the NFL as opposed to just boycotting. Taxpayers are saying they are done with tax breaks and financing facilities.

I don’t see this ending well for the NFL.

Wait until next year, we’ll see how many season ticket holders abstain. This year they still bought their season tickets as the protest hadn’t really happened across the league. Many were sold on at a discount, enabling others whom might not have gone to a game be able to afford it.

It will be different next year.

A 10% decline for people who are watching NFL games for free on television

It's much worse for the paying side of the revenue stream.

Game attendance is down more than 10 % in most markets but even worse, ticket prices are down as much as 50% for secondary ticket sellers.

Suspect merchandise sales are taking a similar hit a well.

NFL was on at Thanksgiving but no seemed as enthused as in past

Kids all talked about taking a knee and the LaVar Ball train wreck.

They were not impressed.
